CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1         Background of the Study

The concept of cooperative societies has a long history, rooted in the principles of mutual aid and collective effort. These organizations aim to meet the common economic, social, and cultural needs of their members, who democratically control the enterprise. The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) of Nigeria, like many other organizations, has embraced the cooperative society model to enhance the welfare and financial stability of its employees.

Cooperative societies within organizations such as the FRSC serve multiple functions. They act as financial institutions that provide members with access to credit facilities at reasonable interest rates, which is especially beneficial in an environment where access to traditional banking services might be limited or burdensome. The cooperative society model empowers members by pooling resources together to create a fund that can be utilized for various purposes, including personal loans, emergency funding, and investment opportunities.
