THE IMPACT OF EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

ABSTRACT

This study is to investigate the impact of educational facilities on the academic performance of students in secondary schools in Akoko- Edo Local Government Area of Edo State. Eight research questions are developed to capture the topic and questionnaire is designed to elicit information from the respondents which comprise of teachers and students of the selected schools, 100 population samples were randomly selected from the five schools in the L.G.A. percentage and frequency distribution were used to present the result of the information gathered. The findings revealed the contribution of adequate teaching material or facilities to the performance of students, the importance of teaching facilities, problems militating against the use of educational facilities and how it can be resolved in the study area.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Education plays a crucial role in shaping the intellectual, social, and economic development of individuals and societies at large. A significant factor influencing the quality of education is the availability and quality of educational facilities, which directly impacts students' academic performance. Educational facilities encompass various physical, human, and technological resources, such as classrooms, libraries, laboratories, sports facilities, and teaching materials, all of which contribute to the effectiveness of the learning environment. Research suggests that well-equipped educational facilities enhance students’ learning experience, leading to better academic outcomes (Ogunyemi et al., 2019). In contrast, inadequate or poorly maintained facilities can create an environment that hinders learning and academic progress (Adeniran, 2020).

In secondary schools, which are foundational to a student's academic journey, the state of educational facilities plays a pivotal role in determining the quality of education students receive. The increasing demand for secondary education and the rising number of students in these institutions have often outpaced the provision of adequate facilities (Bello et al., 2021). As a result, many secondary schools, particularly in developing countries, face challenges such as overcrowded classrooms, inadequate teaching materials, insufficient laboratory space, and limited access to technology (Okebukola, 2020). These limitations can have detrimental effects on students’ academic performance, contributing to high dropout rates, low test scores, and overall poor academic achievement.

The relationship between educational facilities and academic performance is multi-faceted, involving not just the physical condition of the facilities, but also how these resources are utilized and maintained by teachers and students. Studies have shown that the quality of classrooms, availability of modern teaching tools, and the presence of essential learning resources like libraries and laboratories significantly affect students' academic success (Akinyemi & Ogunleye, 2022). For instance, schools with well-maintained libraries and updated textbooks enable students to engage in independent learning, which is linked to improved performance in exams and tests (Adeyanju et al., 2021). Furthermore, schools that integrate technology into their curriculum provide students with access to a broader range of learning materials, improving their understanding of complex subjects (Okunade & Ogunleye, 2019).

However, despite the importance of these facilities, many secondary schools in both rural and urban areas, particularly in developing countries, continue to grapple with insufficient resources. Inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, and a lack of government support contribute to these challenges (Ojo & Olaniyan, 2020). Furthermore, the allocation of resources often lacks equity, with schools in affluent areas receiving more investment in educational facilities than those in disadvantaged communities, thereby widening the educational performance gap between different student groups (Omotayo, 2021).

This disparity in the provision of educational facilities has sparked significant debate among policymakers, educators, and researchers. Understanding the impact of educational facilities on students' academic performance is critical for developing effective strategies to enhance the quality of education and bridge the gap between schools with varying resources. In particular, the need for targeted investments in educational infrastructure, coupled with appropriate training for teachers to maximize the use of available resources, is essential to improving the academic outcomes of students in secondary schools.

Statement of the Problem

The problem of inadequate educational facilities in secondary schools remains a significant barrier to improving academic performance in many parts of the world, especially in developing countries. Many secondary schools are still struggling with overcrowded classrooms, poorly equipped laboratories, outdated textbooks, and a lack of technological resources. As a result, students face challenges that hinder their ability to perform well academically. This situation raises critical questions about how the quality of educational facilities influences students' learning outcomes and what measures can be taken to address these deficiencies. This study aims to investigate the impact of educational facilities on the academic performance of students in secondary schools, specifically focusing on the availability, quality, and utilization of resources, and how these factors contribute to students' academic achievements.

Purpose of the Study

The primary purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the quality and availability of educational facilities and students’ academic performance in secondary schools. The study will focus on understanding how factors such as classroom size, availability of learning materials, infrastructure quality, and access to technology affect students’ performance in key academic subjects. By investigating these relationships, the study aims to provide insights that can inform policy decisions and recommendations for improving educational facilities in secondary schools, particularly in under-resourced areas.

Research Questions

The following research questions guide this study:

1.    How does the quality of classroom facilities affect the academic performance of students in secondary schools?

2.    What is the impact of the availability of teaching and learning materials on students' academic outcomes?

3.    How does the presence of extracurricular facilities (e.g., sports and arts facilities) influence students’ overall academic performance?

4.    To what extent does the use of technology in the classroom improve students’ academic performance in secondary schools?

5.    How do teachers’ utilization and maintenance of available facilities affect students' academic achievements?

Significance of the Study

The findings from this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the relationship between educational facilities and academic performance in secondary schools. By providing empirical evidence on the impact of various educational resources, the study will help stakeholders, including school administrators, policymakers, and educators, understand the importance of investing in quality educational facilities. Additionally, the study will offer recommendations on how to better utilize available resources and advocate for equitable distribution of educational facilities to improve academic outcomes for all students. In the long term, enhancing educational facilities in secondary schools may lead to higher student achievement, reduced dropout rates, and better preparedness for future academic and professional pursuits.

Scope of the Study

This study will focus on secondary schools located in urban and rural areas, with a particular emphasis on those that face challenges related to the availability and quality of educational facilities. The study will explore various types of educational facilities, including classrooms, libraries, laboratories, sports facilities, and technological resources. Data will be collected from both public and private secondary schools, and the academic performance of students will be measured through their performance in standardized exams and internal assessments. The study will be conducted within a specific geographical region, and the findings will be applicable to similar educational contexts in other developing countries.

Limitation of the Study

Several limitations may affect the outcomes of this study. One of the main limitations is the availability of data on the actual academic performance of students, as some schools may not have accurate or up-to-date records of student grades. Additionally, the study may be limited by the number of schools that are willing to participate, especially those in more remote areas that may be reluctant to share information due to concerns about confidentiality or institutional reputation. Furthermore, the study's reliance on self-reported data from school administrators and teachers may introduce biases, as participants may provide socially desirable responses or underreport issues related to facility deficiencies.
