Effect of Accountancy Professional Orientation on Students’ Perception of the Accounting Profession in Nigerian Institutions

Abstract

Accountancy professional orientation refers to the educational exposure and guidance provided to students about the nature, responsibilities, career opportunities, ethical expectations, and professional requirements of accountancy, while students’ perception of the accounting profession refers to their views, beliefs, attitudes, and understanding of the profession and its relevance to contemporary business and society. A positive perception of accounting can influence students’ interest in the profession, commitment to their studies, and willingness to pursue accounting-related careers. However, inadequate professional orientation may leave students with limited or inaccurate understanding of the nature and opportunities within the accounting profession. This study therefore examines the effect of accountancy professional orientation on students’ perception of the accounting profession in Nigerian institutions. Accountancy professional orientation exposes students to different areas of accounting practice, professional responsibilities, ethical standards, career pathways, professional qualifications, and the changing demands of the accounting profession. It may be provided through orientation programmes, professional seminars, career talks, interactions with practicing accountants, professional workshops, and classroom activities. Such exposure can help students understand the practical relevance of accounting knowledge and become more familiar with the expectations and opportunities associated with accountancy practice. Students’ perception of the accounting profession involves their views regarding the relevance, attractiveness, credibility, career opportunities, professional status, and future prospects of accounting. Students who receive adequate professional orientation may develop a clearer understanding of the diverse roles performed by accountants and the skills required for professional practice. Professional orientation can therefore help students form more informed and realistic perceptions of accounting and appreciate its contribution to organizations, businesses, government, and society. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education and related accountancy students in selected Nigerian tertiary institutions. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ exposure to accountancy professional orientation and their perception of the accounting profession. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that accountancy professional orientation has a significant positive effect on students’ perception of the accounting profession. Students who receive greater professional orientation are expected to demonstrate a better understanding of accounting career opportunities, professional responsibilities, ethical expectations, and the relevance of accounting to contemporary organizations. The findings are also expected to indicate that meaningful exposure to professional practice can contribute to more positive and informed perceptions of the accounting profession. The study will have important implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education. Institutions and accounting lecturers may need to provide students with regular opportunities to interact with practicing accountants and learn about current developments in the profession. Professional talks, career guidance sessions, workplace presentations, practical seminars, and exposure to different accounting career areas can help students connect classroom learning with professional practice and develop a clearer understanding of the profession. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, accounting lecturers, tertiary institutions, professional accounting educators, career counsellors, and curriculum developers. Students may gain a better understanding of accounting as a profession and its various career opportunities, while lecturers may obtain useful information for improving professional orientation activities. Tertiary institutions and curriculum developers may also use the findings to strengthen career-oriented components of accounting programmes and improve students’ exposure to professional practice. The study recommends that tertiary institutions should strengthen accountancy professional orientation through career guidance, professional seminars, practitioner interactions, workplace exposure, and discussions on current developments in accounting practice. Students should also be encouraged to participate actively in professional orientation programmes to gain a broader understanding of the profession and its career opportunities. The study concludes that effective accountancy professional orientation can positively influence students’ perception of the accounting profession by providing relevant knowledge and meaningful exposure to professional practice.
