Effect of Accounting Education on Students’ Understanding of Shareholder Protection in Nigerian Companies
Abstract
Accounting education provides students with knowledge of financial reporting, corporate governance, business law, accountability, and professional practices, while shareholder protection refers to the rights, safeguards, and mechanisms established to protect shareholders’ interests within companies. Understanding shareholder protection is important to Accounting Education students because accountants operate within corporate environments where financial information, corporate decisions, reporting, and accountability directly affect shareholders. However, inadequate knowledge of shareholder rights and protection mechanisms may limit students’ understanding of their professional responsibilities in corporate settings. This study therefore examines the effect of accounting education on students’ understanding of shareholder protection in Nigerian companies. Accounting education exposes students to financial accounting, auditing, corporate reporting, business law, corporate governance, taxation, and professional ethics. These areas provide students with knowledge of corporate structures, financial disclosures, decision-making processes, accountability mechanisms, and the responsibilities of company officers. Through lectures, case studies, practical exercises, and discussions, students can develop an understanding of shareholders’ rights, participation in corporate affairs, access to relevant information, voting rights, dividend interests, and mechanisms for addressing unfair treatment. Students’ understanding of shareholder protection involves knowledge of the rights and interests of shareholders and the mechanisms available to safeguard those interests within corporate organizations. It includes awareness of shareholder participation in meetings, voting rights, access to corporate information, dividend-related interests, protection against unfair treatment, and avenues for addressing corporate misconduct. Accounting education can strengthen this understanding by connecting corporate governance principles with financial reporting, auditing, business law, and professional accountability. Adequate knowledge may enable students to better appreciate the relationship between accounting practices and the protection of shareholders’ interests. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions, from which an appropriate sample will be selected. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a knowledge assessment instrument designed to measure students’ exposure to accounting education and their understanding of shareholder protection. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that accounting education has a significant positive effect on students’ understanding of shareholder protection. Students with stronger exposure to corporate reporting, auditing, corporate governance, business law, and professional ethics are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of shareholder rights and available protection mechanisms. The findings may also identify areas where students have limited understanding, particularly concerning shareholder participation, corporate disclosures, voting rights, and mechanisms for addressing unfair corporate practices. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in Accounting Education. Lecturers may need to provide greater attention to shareholder rights and corporate governance within relevant accounting courses. Case studies involving corporate disputes, shareholder meetings, financial disclosures, voting decisions, and corporate governance practices can help students connect theoretical concepts with practical corporate situations. Practical exercises may also improve students’ understanding of how accounting information and professional practices can support transparency and protect shareholders’ interests. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, tertiary institutions, curriculum developers, employers, and other stakeholders interested in corporate governance and accounting education. Students may gain better preparation for professional roles involving corporate reporting, financial accountability, governance, and communication with corporate stakeholders. Lecturers and curriculum developers may also use the findings to strengthen shareholder protection and corporate governance content within Accounting Education programmes. The study recommends that shareholder protection concepts should be given greater attention in relevant Accounting Education courses through case studies, practical exercises, corporate governance scenarios, and discussions of shareholder rights and responsibilities. Lecturers should emphasize corporate disclosures, shareholder participation, voting rights, accountability, transparency, and mechanisms for protecting legitimate shareholder interests. Tertiary institutions should also encourage practical learning that connects accounting knowledge with corporate governance issues. In conclusion, effective accounting education can improve students’ understanding of shareholder protection and better prepare future accounting professionals to contribute to transparent, accountable, and responsible corporate practices.
