Effect of Workplace Accounting Tasks on the Practical Knowledge of B.Sc./HND Accounting Education Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Workplace accounting tasks are an important component of practical Accounting Education because they expose students to accounting activities that are performed in actual organizational settings. Practical knowledge refers to students’ ability to understand and apply accounting concepts, procedures, and skills when dealing with real or realistic accounting situations. B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students require adequate practical knowledge to effectively transition from classroom learning to professional accounting practice. However, limited exposure to workplace-related accounting tasks may create a gap between theoretical understanding and practical application. This study therefore examines the effect of workplace accounting tasks on the practical knowledge of B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students in Nigeria. Workplace accounting tasks involve activities commonly performed within accounting departments and business organizations, such as recording transactions, preparing financial documents, processing invoices and receipts, maintaining ledgers, reconciling accounts, organizing financial records, preparing reports, and handling accounting information. Exposure to such activities allows students to observe and practice accounting procedures in realistic contexts. Through workplace-oriented assignments, simulations, practical training, and relevant work experience, students can develop familiarity with accounting processes and understand how accounting knowledge is applied in organizational environments. Practical knowledge refers to students’ ability to apply accounting principles and procedures when performing accounting-related activities. It includes the ability to record transactions correctly, prepare accounting documents, organize financial information, solve practical accounting problems, and use accounting procedures appropriately in realistic situations. Workplace accounting tasks can strengthen practical knowledge by giving students opportunities to apply classroom concepts to actual or simulated workplace activities. Students who receive adequate exposure to workplace accounting tasks are therefore expected to demonstrate stronger practical understanding and improved ability to perform accounting activities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Data will be collected using a structured workplace accounting tasks questionnaire and a practical knowledge assessment designed to measure students’ exposure to workplace-related accounting activities and their ability to apply accounting knowledge practically. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique at a 0.05 level of significance to determine the effect of workplace accounting tasks on students’ practical knowledge. The study is expected to establish that workplace accounting tasks have a significant positive effect on the practical knowledge of B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students. Students with greater exposure to workplace-related accounting activities are expected to demonstrate better ability to apply accounting principles, perform accounting procedures, organize financial information, and solve practical accounting problems. The findings may also identify specific workplace accounting tasks where students require additional exposure and training to strengthen their practical knowledge. The expected findings will have important implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education. Accounting lecturers may need to incorporate more workplace-oriented activities into accounting instruction through simulations, practical assignments, case studies, accounting laboratory exercises, and realistic business transactions. Students should be given opportunities to perform accounting tasks that reflect actual workplace responsibilities. This approach can help reduce the gap between theoretical accounting instruction and the practical requirements of accounting employment. The study will be beneficial to B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students, lecturers, tertiary institutions, curriculum developers, professional accounting bodies, and employers of accounting graduates. Students may gain stronger practical accounting knowledge and greater familiarity with workplace accounting procedures. Lecturers may obtain useful insights for improving practice-oriented instruction, while institutions and curriculum developers may use the findings to strengthen workplace-related components of Accounting Education programmes. Professional bodies and employers may also benefit from graduates who possess greater practical understanding of accounting tasks and workplace requirements. The study recommends that tertiary institutions should provide greater opportunities for B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students to engage in workplace-related accounting tasks through practical training, accounting simulations, field-based activities, internships, and realistic accounting assignments. Lecturers should integrate practical workplace scenarios into accounting courses and encourage students to apply theoretical concepts to actual accounting situations. Institutions should also strengthen collaboration with relevant organizations to provide students with meaningful practical exposure. The study concludes that regular exposure to workplace accounting tasks can significantly contribute to improving the practical knowledge of B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students.
