Impact of Accounting for Consignment Transactions on Students’ Ability to Determine Consignment Profit in Nigerian Polytechnics
Abstract
Accounting for consignment transactions is an important area of financial accounting education because it equips students with the knowledge and skills required to record and account for transactions involving goods sent by one party to another for sale. Consignment arrangements involve specific accounting procedures that differ from ordinary sales transactions, particularly in the treatment of goods sent on consignment, expenses, sales proceeds, commission, and unsold goods. Students therefore need adequate understanding of consignment accounting to accurately determine the profit or loss arising from consignment transactions. This study examines the impact of accounting for consignment transactions on students’ ability to determine consignment profit in Nigerian polytechnics. Accounting for consignment transactions exposes students to the roles of the consignor and consignee and the accounting procedures associated with each party. Through effective instruction, students learn how to account for goods sent on consignment, expenses incurred, sales made by the consignee, commission, and other relevant transactions. Students are also expected to understand the treatment of abnormal and normal losses and the valuation of unsold goods where applicable. Practical exercises involving different consignment transactions can help students understand how these items affect the calculation of consignment profit. The ability to determine consignment profit requires students to correctly identify relevant income and expenses and apply appropriate accounting procedures. Students need to understand how sales proceeds, commission, freight, carriage, insurance, and other expenses influence the final profit or loss on consignment. Effective practical instruction can help students analyze consignment information, distinguish relevant items, and perform the necessary calculations accurately. Regular practice may also reduce computational errors and improve students’ confidence in solving consignment accounting problems. The study will adopt a survey research design and focus on accounting education students in selected Nigerian polytechnics. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on students’ exposure to accounting for consignment transactions and their ability to determine consignment profit. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, and the hypothesis formulated for the study will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that accounting for consignment transactions has a significant positive impact on students’ ability to determine consignment profit. Students who receive adequate instruction and practical exposure are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify relevant consignment transactions, account for associated expenses and commission, determine the value of unsold goods, and calculate the resulting profit or loss accurately. Continuous practical exercises may also strengthen students’ numerical and analytical skills in consignment accounting. The findings are expected to have important implications for the teaching and learning of financial accounting in Nigerian polytechnics. Accounting lecturers may be encouraged to combine theoretical explanations with practical exercises involving realistic consignment transactions. Classroom activities can include preparation of consignment accounts, calculation of commission, treatment of expenses, valuation of unsold stock, and determination of consignment profit or loss. Such activities can provide students with opportunities to apply accounting principles to practical situations. The study will be beneficial to accounting education students, lecturers, curriculum developers, polytechnic administrators, and other stakeholders in accounting education. Students may develop stronger practical competence in consignment accounting and improve their ability to determine consignment profit, while lecturers may gain insight into the importance of practical transaction-based instruction. Curriculum developers may also use the findings to strengthen the practical treatment of consignment accounting within accounting education programmes. The study recommends that Nigerian polytechnics should strengthen instruction on consignment accounting through regular practical exercises, transaction-based problems, account preparation activities, and guided profit calculations. Lecturers should expose students to different consignment situations and provide timely feedback on their calculations and accounting treatments. The study concludes that effective instruction in accounting for consignment transactions can significantly improve students’ ability to determine consignment profit and contribute to the development of stronger practical accounting competence.
