Impact of Accounting Practice Exercises on the Accuracy of Financial Records Prepared by B.Sc./HND Accounting Education Students
Abstract
Accounting practice exercises refer to structured practical activities that require students to apply accounting procedures and principles to business transactions and financial recording tasks. Accuracy of financial records refers to the ability to prepare accounting records correctly, completely, and consistently without material errors or omissions. Accounting practice exercises are important in Accounting Education because they provide students with opportunities to repeatedly practise financial recording procedures and apply theoretical accounting knowledge to practical situations. However, insufficient practical exercises may affect students’ ability to prepare accurate financial records. Therefore, this study will examine the impact of accounting practice exercises on the accuracy of financial records prepared by B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students. Accounting practice exercises involve activities such as analyzing business transactions, preparing source documents, recording transactions in journals and subsidiary books, posting entries to ledgers, preparing trial balances, making adjustments, and preparing financial statements. These exercises may be presented through classroom assignments, simulated business transactions, accounting practice sets, case studies, and laboratory activities. Regular practice enables students to become familiar with accounting procedures, identify common recording errors, improve their computational skills, and develop greater confidence in preparing financial records. Accuracy of financial records refers to the extent to which financial information recorded and prepared by students correctly reflects the underlying business transactions and follows established accounting procedures. It involves correct transaction analysis, appropriate account classification, accurate amounts, proper debit and credit entries, correct ledger posting, and consistency in the preparation of financial statements. Accounting practice exercises can improve this accuracy by providing students with repeated opportunities to perform accounting tasks, identify mistakes, receive corrections, and refine their recording techniques. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and an appropriate practical accounting assessment designed to measure students’ exposure to accounting practice exercises and the accuracy of financial records they prepare. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique at a 0.05 level of significance to determine the impact of accounting practice exercises on the accuracy of students’ financial records. The study is expected to establish that accounting practice exercises have a significant positive impact on the accuracy of financial records prepared by B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students. Students who engage regularly in accounting practice exercises are expected to demonstrate greater accuracy in analyzing transactions, recording entries, posting to ledgers, preparing trial balances, and producing financial statements. The study may also establish that repeated practical exercises provide students with opportunities to detect and correct errors, thereby strengthening their ability to maintain accurate financial records. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Accounting Education. Accounting lecturers may need to provide students with regular and carefully structured practice exercises in addition to theoretical instruction. Exercises based on realistic business transactions can enable students to practise the complete recording process and receive feedback on their performance. Lecturers can also use progressive exercises that move from basic transaction recording to more complex financial reporting tasks, thereby strengthening students’ practical accounting competence and accuracy. The study will be beneficial to B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students, accounting lecturers, tertiary institutions, curriculum developers, and employers of accounting graduates. Students may develop stronger practical skills and greater accuracy in preparing financial records, while lecturers may gain useful information about the value of repeated accounting practice in developing students’ recording competence. Institutions and curriculum developers may also use the findings to strengthen practical components of Accounting Education programmes and improve students’ preparation for accounting-related workplace responsibilities. The study will recommend that tertiary institutions increase the provision of practical accounting exercises within B.Sc./HND Accounting Education programmes. Accounting lecturers should provide regular transaction-recording exercises, practice sets, ledger activities, trial balance exercises, and financial statement preparation tasks, together with timely feedback and correction. Institutions should also provide adequate accounting learning materials and practical resources to support repeated practice. The study concludes that consistent engagement in accounting practice exercises can significantly improve the accuracy of financial records prepared by B.Sc./HND Accounting Education students.
