Impact of Data Visualization Activities on Accounting Education Students’ Ability to Interpret Business Information
Abstract
Data visualization activities are increasingly relevant to accounting education because they provide students with ways to present and understand complex business information through charts, graphs, dashboards, and other visual formats. Business information may include financial figures, sales data, costs, profitability indicators, budgets, and other information used to evaluate organizational activities and performance. However, accounting students may experience difficulties interpreting large volumes of business data when information is presented mainly in numerical or textual form. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of data visualization activities on Accounting Education students’ ability to interpret business information. Data visualization activities involve learning tasks in which students organize, present, examine, and analyze business information using visual representations. These activities may include the use of bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, tables, dashboards, and other graphical presentations to communicate accounting and business data. In accounting education, students can use visualization activities to identify trends, compare financial figures, recognize patterns, and understand relationships among different business indicators. Regular exposure to such activities may help students develop practical skills for handling and communicating business information. Students’ ability to interpret business information refers to their capacity to examine business data, understand its meaning, identify relevant patterns and relationships, compare information, and draw appropriate conclusions. Effective interpretation requires students to move beyond simply reading figures and develop the ability to extract meaningful information from different forms of business data. Data visualization activities may strengthen this ability by allowing students to interact with visual representations of accounting and business information and apply analytical skills to realistic business situations. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a practical interpretation assessment involving visualized business information. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that data visualization activities have a significant positive impact on Accounting Education students’ ability to interpret business information. Students who receive greater exposure to visualization-based learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify trends, compare business figures, recognize relationships, and draw appropriate conclusions from business information. The study may also reveal that students with limited exposure to visual data analysis experience greater difficulty interpreting complex business information presented in numerical or graphical formats. The findings are expected to have important implications for accounting teaching and learning. Accounting lecturers may need to incorporate more data visualization activities into accounting lessons and practical assignments. Students can be given opportunities to transform accounting data into charts, graphs, and dashboards and subsequently interpret the information presented. Business cases involving sales, costs, profitability, budgets, and financial performance may also provide practical opportunities for students to develop data interpretation skills and connect accounting information with business decisions. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, tertiary institutions, curriculum developers, and employers. Students may develop stronger analytical and digital skills for interpreting business information, while lecturers may gain useful insights into the value of visualization-based learning. Tertiary institutions and curriculum developers may use the findings to strengthen data-related components of accounting education and encourage the integration of modern information presentation techniques. Employers may also benefit from graduates who can effectively interpret and communicate business information in visually driven work environments. The study recommends that accounting lecturers should integrate data visualization activities into accounting education through practical exercises, business cases, graphical analysis, and dashboard-based assignments. Students should be encouraged to interpret visualized accounting and business information and explain the conclusions obtained from such presentations. Institutions should also provide appropriate digital tools and learning resources to support data visualization activities. It is concluded that regular exposure to data visualization can improve Accounting Education students’ ability to interpret business information and strengthen their analytical and practical accounting competence.
