Impact of Professional Practice Exposure on the Career Commitment of Accounting Education Students in Nigerian Institutions
Abstract
Professional practice exposure refers to students’ opportunities to experience and understand the activities, responsibilities, standards, and working environments associated with the accounting profession, while career commitment refers to the degree of dedication, attachment, and willingness of students to pursue and remain in their chosen accounting career. Adequate exposure to professional practice is important to Accounting Education students because practical experiences can help them understand the realities of the accounting profession and develop realistic expectations about their future careers. However, limited exposure to professional accounting practice may create uncertainty about career expectations and reduce students’ commitment to the profession. This study therefore examines the impact of professional practice exposure on the career commitment of Accounting Education students in Nigerian institutions. Professional practice exposure may involve accounting internships, interaction with practicing accountants, professional workshops, workplace visits, practical accounting assignments, professional seminars, and participation in activities that demonstrate actual accounting responsibilities. Such experiences can expose students to financial reporting, auditing, taxation, financial management, ethical responsibilities, professional communication, workplace procedures, and the use of accounting technologies. These forms of exposure can help students connect classroom learning with professional practice and develop a clearer understanding of the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and responsibilities required in accounting careers. Career commitment involves students’ willingness to pursue accounting-related careers, their attachment to the profession, determination to develop professionally, and intention to remain engaged in accounting practice. Professional practice exposure can influence career commitment by helping students understand available career pathways, workplace expectations, professional responsibilities, and opportunities for career development. Students who have meaningful exposure to accounting practice may develop greater confidence in their career choice and a stronger willingness to invest in professional development and pursue long-term careers in accounting. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students in selected tertiary institutions, from which an appropriate sample will be selected. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure students’ professional practice exposure and career commitment. The research instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that professional practice exposure has a significant positive impact on the career commitment of Accounting Education students. Students who receive greater exposure to practical accounting activities, professional environments, practicing accountants, and workplace expectations are expected to demonstrate stronger commitment to pursuing accounting-related careers. The findings may also indicate that inadequate practical exposure can contribute to uncertainty about professional responsibilities, career pathways, and long-term career development. The findings are expected to have important implications for teaching and learning in Accounting Education. Lecturers and institutions may need to provide students with more opportunities to experience practical accounting activities and professional environments. Internship programmes, workplace visits, practitioner-led sessions, professional workshops, practical assignments, and career-focused activities can help students develop a realistic understanding of accounting practice. Such experiences may strengthen students’ confidence, professional identity, career awareness, and commitment to continued development within the accounting profession. The study will be beneficial to Accounting Education students, lecturers, tertiary institutions, curriculum developers, employers, accounting practitioners, and professional accounting organizations. Students may gain clearer knowledge of professional expectations and career opportunities, while lecturers and institutions may obtain useful information for improving practical components of Accounting Education programmes. Employers and professional organizations may also benefit from graduates who demonstrate stronger commitment to accounting careers and greater awareness of professional practice. The study recommends that tertiary institutions should strengthen professional practice exposure within Accounting Education programmes through internships, practical workplace experiences, interaction with accounting practitioners, professional workshops, workplace visits, and practice-oriented assignments. Lecturers should connect classroom instruction with real-world accounting responsibilities and career pathways. Institutions should also encourage collaboration with accounting organizations and practitioners to provide students with meaningful professional experiences. In conclusion, effective professional practice exposure can strengthen the career commitment of Accounting Education students and better prepare them for sustained participation and development within the accounting profession.
