Assessment of Farmers’ Adoption of Small-Scale Agricultural Processing Enterprises

Abstract

Small-scale agricultural processing enterprises involve activities through which farmers process agricultural products into forms that are easier to store, transport, market, or consume. Such activities may include drying, milling, grinding, oil extraction, smoking, packaging, and processing of crops, livestock products, and other agricultural commodities. Adoption of small-scale processing enterprises can help farmers reduce post-harvest losses, improve product quality, increase the value of agricultural produce, generate additional income, and create employment opportunities within rural communities. This study will assess farmers’ adoption of small-scale agricultural processing enterprises. It will determine the level of farmers’ adoption of different agricultural processing activities and identify the types of processing enterprises commonly adopted by farmers. The study will also examine the factors associated with farmers’ adoption of small-scale agricultural processing enterprises and identify the major sources of information and support available to farmers. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of processing activities such as crop drying, milling, grinding, oil extraction, smoking, sorting, grading, packaging, livestock product processing, and other small-scale agricultural processing enterprises. It will also examine farmers’ access to processing equipment, financial resources, markets, raw materials, technical information, electricity, storage facilities, and agricultural extension services. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on their adoption of small-scale agricultural processing enterprises. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while adoption indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to assess the level of adoption and determine factors associated with farmers’ participation in agricultural processing enterprises. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adoption of small-scale agricultural processing enterprises among farmers. Farmers with better access to processing equipment, extension information, finance, markets, technical training, and raw materials may demonstrate higher levels of adoption. However, high equipment costs, inadequate capital, unreliable electricity supply, limited technical skills, poor market access, insufficient processing facilities, and high operating costs may constrain farmers’ adoption of processing enterprises. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural processors, government agencies, financial institutions, agricultural researchers, non-governmental organisations, agribusiness organisations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information on the level of farmers’ adoption of small-scale agricultural processing enterprises and identify challenges affecting their development. The findings may also assist relevant organisations in designing programmes that promote value addition, reduce post-harvest losses, improve rural income generation, and strengthen agricultural enterprise development. The study concludes that adoption of small-scale agricultural processing enterprises can provide farmers with opportunities to increase the value of agricultural products and improve the economic returns from farming activities. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant organisations strengthen farmers’ access to processing training, appropriate equipment, financial support, market information, technical advisory services, and processing facilities to encourage sustainable development of small-scale agricultural processing enterprises.
