Assessment of Farmers’ Awareness of Integrated Nutrient Management

Abstract

Integrated nutrient management is an important approach to maintaining soil fertility and improving crop productivity through the balanced use of organic and inorganic nutrient sources. The approach may involve the combined use of mineral fertilizers, organic manure, compost, crop residues, biological fertilizers, and other nutrient management practices. Farmers’ awareness of integrated nutrient management is important because adequate understanding can influence their ability to select and combine appropriate nutrient sources according to crop and soil requirements. This study will assess farmers’ awareness of integrated nutrient management. It will determine the level of farmers’ awareness of the principles, practices, and potential benefits of integrated nutrient management and identify areas where awareness may be limited. The study will also examine farmers’ sources of information on integrated nutrient management and the contribution of agricultural extension services to their awareness. The study will focus on farmers’ awareness of soil fertility management, mineral fertilizer use, organic manure application, composting, crop residue management, biofertilizer use, nutrient recycling, soil testing, appropriate fertilizer rates, and the combined use of organic and inorganic nutrient sources. Attention will also be given to information sources such as agricultural extension agents, farmer groups, input dealers, radio programmes, demonstrations, training sessions, and other agricultural information channels that may influence farmers’ awareness. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and awareness assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to assess farmers’ awareness levels. Awareness scores, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will also be used to examine factors associated with farmers’ awareness of integrated nutrient management. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of awareness among farmers regarding integrated nutrient management practices. Farmers with greater access to agricultural extension services, training, practical demonstrations, and reliable agricultural information may demonstrate higher levels of awareness. However, inadequate extension contact, limited access to organic nutrient sources, high costs of mineral fertilizers, insufficient technical information, and limited understanding of soil fertility requirements may contribute to low awareness among some farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, soil management specialists, agricultural development agencies, researchers, government institutions, and non-governmental organizations. It may provide useful information on farmers’ existing awareness of integrated nutrient management and identify specific areas requiring additional education and technical support. The findings may also assist agricultural agencies in developing appropriate awareness programmes that promote balanced and sustainable nutrient management. The study concludes that adequate awareness of integrated nutrient management is important for improving farmers’ understanding of sustainable soil fertility management and crop nutrition. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical demonstrations, field training, soil fertility information, and regular advisory services on the combined use of organic and inorganic nutrient sources. These measures can improve farmers’ awareness of integrated nutrient management and support sustainable agricultural production.
