Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agribusiness Opportunity Screening

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of agribusiness opportunity screening. Agribusiness opportunity screening involves the systematic assessment of potential agricultural business opportunities based on factors such as market demand, available resources, profitability, production requirements, risks, and customer needs. Adequate knowledge of opportunity screening can help farmers identify realistic business opportunities and make informed decisions before investing resources in agricultural enterprises. The study will assess farmers’ level of knowledge of agribusiness opportunity screening and determine their understanding of the factors used to evaluate potential agricultural business opportunities. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of market demand, resource availability, production costs, expected returns, competition, risks, and other considerations involved in selecting suitable agribusiness opportunities. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires administered through an appropriate sampling procedure. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique may be used to examine variations in farmers’ knowledge of agribusiness opportunity screening. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agribusiness opportunity screening. Farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension information and business-related training are expected to demonstrate better understanding of how to assess potential agricultural enterprises. However, limited access to market information, inadequate business knowledge, insufficient financial information, and limited exposure to agribusiness training may contribute to gaps in farmers’ knowledge. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, financial institutions, agribusiness organizations, and farmers’ associations by providing information on farmers’ understanding of agribusiness opportunity screening. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing educational programmes that improve farmers’ capacity to assess agricultural business opportunities before committing financial and material resources. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of agribusiness opportunity screening can support informed agricultural enterprise selection and business planning among farmers. It will recommend strengthening extension education on agribusiness opportunity assessment, improving farmers’ access to market and financial information, and providing practical training on evaluating the feasibility, profitability, risks, and resource requirements of potential agricultural business opportunities.
