Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of agricultural business networking. Agricultural business networking involves the development and maintenance of relationships among farmers, agricultural input suppliers, produce buyers, processors, financial institutions, extension personnel, transporters, marketers, and other actors within the agricultural value chain. Adequate knowledge of business networking can help farmers identify useful business contacts, exchange information, access markets, obtain inputs, and establish relationships that support the development of agricultural enterprises. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of agricultural business networking is therefore important for understanding their preparedness to engage effectively with relevant agricultural business actors. The study will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural business networking. It will specifically assess farmers’ knowledge of identifying potential business partners, establishing professional relationships, communicating with agricultural business actors, participating in agricultural business associations, exchanging market information, maintaining business contacts, negotiating business relationships, and accessing opportunities through agricultural networks. The study will also examine farmers’ awareness of the potential benefits of agricultural business networking for their farming enterprises. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ knowledge and awareness of agricultural business networking practices and opportunities. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation to determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural business networking. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural business networking. Farmers may demonstrate greater knowledge of informal networking through fellow farmers, buyers, input suppliers, and local agricultural associations, while knowledge of more structured business networking approaches may be comparatively limited. The study may also identify gaps in farmers’ knowledge of maintaining professional business relationships, accessing new business contacts, and using networking opportunities to improve agricultural enterprise activities. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, agricultural development agencies, farmer organizations, policymakers, agribusiness stakeholders, and other institutions involved in supporting farmers’ enterprise development. The findings are expected to identify areas where farmers require additional education and guidance on agricultural business networking. Such information can assist extension personnel in developing training programmes that strengthen farmers’ communication, relationship-building, market linkage, and business networking capabilities. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of agricultural business networking can support farmers in developing useful relationships and accessing opportunities within the agricultural business environment. It will recommend strengthening extension education on agricultural networking, encouraging participation in farmer and agribusiness associations, promoting interaction between farmers and agricultural value-chain actors, and providing practical training on business relationship development. Improving farmers’ knowledge of agricultural business networking is expected to support stronger agricultural enterprise development and market participation.
