Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Development Committees

Abstract

Agricultural development committees play an important role in supporting rural agricultural development by facilitating community participation, information sharing, coordination of agricultural activities, and communication between farmers and relevant agricultural institutions. Such committees may assist farmers in identifying local agricultural needs, accessing development programmes, mobilizing community resources, and participating in agricultural improvement initiatives. However, the effectiveness of these committees may depend partly on farmers’ understanding of their roles, responsibilities, functions, and activities within agricultural communities. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural development committees. The study will determine farmers’ level of awareness and knowledge of the functions, responsibilities, membership structure, activities, and contributions of agricultural development committees to rural agricultural development. It will also assess farmers’ understanding of how these committees facilitate access to agricultural information, development programmes, extension services, agricultural inputs, and community-based agricultural initiatives. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural development committees, committee functions, committee responsibilities, membership, community participation, agricultural information sharing, development programme coordination, extension linkages, agricultural resource mobilization, farmer representation, community decision-making, and participation in agricultural development activities. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their level of knowledge and identify areas where gaps in understanding may exist. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data and determine farmers’ levels of knowledge. Appropriate inferential statistical methods may also be used to examine associations between selected farmer characteristics and their knowledge of agricultural development committees. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding agricultural development committees. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of committee functions, community participation, and agricultural programme coordination, while others may have limited knowledge of committee responsibilities, membership procedures, farmer representation, and available agricultural development activities. The study may also identify specific areas where inadequate knowledge limits farmers’ participation in committee activities and community agricultural programmes. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, community-based organizations, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for improving farmer education and community-based agricultural development programmes. The findings may also assist agricultural institutions in strengthening communication with farmers and improving their participation in agricultural development committees. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of agricultural development committees is important for meaningful farmer participation in community-based agricultural development activities. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies and relevant development organizations provide farmers with clear information on the functions, responsibilities, membership, and activities of agricultural development committees. Regular community sensitization, participatory meetings, and extension education should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ understanding and participation.
