Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Enterprise Exit Planning

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of agricultural enterprise exit planning. Agricultural enterprise exit planning involves preparing for the eventual transfer, sale, closure, or withdrawal from a farming or agribusiness enterprise. Adequate knowledge of exit planning can help farmers make informed decisions about the future of their enterprises, protect accumulated assets, manage financial obligations, and ensure an orderly transition of agricultural business activities. The study will assess farmers’ level of knowledge of agricultural enterprise exit planning and determine their understanding of the different options and considerations involved in leaving an agricultural enterprise. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of business valuation, asset management, succession arrangements, enterprise transfer, financial obligations, documentation, and other factors that may be considered when planning an agricultural enterprise exit. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires administered through an appropriate sampling procedure. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique may be used to examine variations in farmers’ knowledge of agricultural enterprise exit planning. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural enterprise exit planning. Farmers with greater exposure to agribusiness information and business management education are expected to demonstrate better understanding of the importance and procedures of exit planning. However, limited awareness of enterprise valuation, inadequate financial knowledge, insufficient succession planning information, and limited access to professional business advisory services may contribute to gaps in farmers’ knowledge. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, financial institutions, agribusiness organizations, and farmers’ associations by providing information on farmers’ understanding of agricultural enterprise exit planning. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing educational programmes that improve farmers’ ability to plan for the orderly transfer, sale, or closure of their agricultural enterprises. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of agricultural enterprise exit planning is important for responsible management and long-term continuity of farm businesses. It will recommend strengthening extension education on enterprise exit planning, improving farmers’ access to agribusiness advisory services, and providing practical training on business valuation, asset management, succession arrangements, financial obligations, and enterprise transfer procedures.
