Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Enterprise Expansion Planning

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of agricultural enterprise expansion planning. Agricultural enterprise expansion planning involves preparing for the growth of farming and agribusiness activities through careful consideration of available resources, market opportunities, production capacity, financial requirements, labour needs, and potential risks. Adequate knowledge of expansion planning can help farmers make informed decisions when increasing the scale or scope of their agricultural enterprises. The study will assess farmers’ level of knowledge of agricultural enterprise expansion planning and determine their understanding of the factors that should be considered when planning to expand an agricultural enterprise. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of financial planning, market assessment, resource allocation, labour requirements, production capacity, infrastructure needs, and risk considerations associated with agricultural enterprise expansion. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires administered through an appropriate sampling procedure. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique may be used to examine variations in farmers’ knowledge of agricultural enterprise expansion planning. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural enterprise expansion planning. Farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services, agribusiness information, and business training are expected to demonstrate better understanding of the requirements for successful enterprise expansion. However, limited access to finance, inadequate market information, insufficient business management knowledge, and limited exposure to enterprise planning education may contribute to knowledge gaps. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, financial institutions, agribusiness organizations, and farmers’ associations by providing information on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural enterprise expansion planning. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing educational programmes that strengthen farmers’ capacity to plan effectively for the growth of their agricultural enterprises. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of agricultural enterprise expansion planning is important for informed and sustainable growth of farm businesses. It will recommend strengthening extension education on enterprise expansion planning, improving farmers’ access to relevant market and financial information, and providing practical training on resource assessment, financial planning, production capacity, market opportunities, and risk management.
