Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Material Reuse

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of agricultural material reuse, focusing on farmers’ understanding of the ways agricultural materials can be reused, recovered, or repurposed to support efficient farm resource management. Agricultural activities generate various materials such as crop residues, animal waste, used containers, organic materials, packaging materials, and other farm by-products that can potentially be reused for productive purposes. Adequate knowledge of material reuse can help farmers reduce waste, lower production costs, conserve resources, and promote environmentally responsible agricultural practices. The study will examine farmers’ knowledge of different methods of agricultural material reuse, including the use of crop residues as mulch or animal feed, conversion of organic materials into compost, reuse of suitable farm materials for storage or other farm activities, and appropriate management of agricultural by-products. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on material reuse, including agricultural extension agents, fellow farmers, farmers’ organizations, training programmes, agricultural media, and other information channels. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural material reuse and their sources of information. The data collected will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be employed to examine variations in farmers’ knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural material reuse. Farmers with greater access to extension education, practical demonstrations, agricultural information, and farmer-to-farmer learning may demonstrate better knowledge of methods for reusing available farm materials. However, inadequate information, limited extension contact, lack of practical training, poor access to suitable reuse technologies, and misconceptions about certain agricultural materials may contribute to knowledge gaps among farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, environmental agencies, farmers’ organizations, and development practitioners on areas where farmers require additional education and technical support. Strengthening extension education through practical demonstrations and locally appropriate information may improve farmers’ understanding of material reuse and encourage more efficient management of agricultural resources. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of agricultural material reuse is important for promoting efficient resource utilization and reducing avoidable agricultural waste. It will recommend increased extension education, practical training, demonstration activities, and improved access to information on safe and productive reuse methods to enhance farmers’ knowledge and support sustainable agricultural practices.
