Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Produce Sorting Equipment

Abstract

Agricultural produce sorting equipment is important in the handling and management of harvested crops because it assists farmers in separating produce according to characteristics such as size, quality, maturity, weight, and physical condition. Proper sorting can improve product uniformity, reduce the presence of damaged or undesirable produce, minimize postharvest losses, and increase the market value of agricultural products. Adequate knowledge of sorting equipment is therefore important for farmers seeking to improve postharvest handling and maintain produce quality. The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural produce sorting equipment. Specifically, it will examine farmers’ awareness of different types of produce sorting equipment, assess their knowledge of the purposes and applications of sorting equipment, determine their understanding of basic operating procedures, and identify the major sources of information through which farmers acquire knowledge about agricultural produce sorting technologies. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to assess their knowledge and awareness of agricultural produce sorting equipment. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to examine relationships between selected farmer characteristics and their level of knowledge of produce sorting equipment. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding agricultural produce sorting equipment. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate awareness of equipment used for sorting produce based on size, weight, maturity, and quality, while others may have limited knowledge of their operation, maintenance, and appropriate applications. Inadequate access to technical information, limited extension support, equipment costs, and insufficient practical training may be identified as factors affecting farmers’ knowledge. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, policymakers, agricultural development organizations, equipment suppliers, and farmers’ associations. Improved knowledge of produce sorting equipment may enable farmers to make better decisions regarding postharvest handling, reduce the marketing of poor-quality produce, and improve the uniformity and marketability of agricultural products. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of agricultural produce sorting equipment is important for improving farmers’ postharvest management practices and maintaining produce quality. It will recommend increased extension education, practical demonstrations, farmer training, improved access to relevant technical information, and greater support for farmers to understand and effectively utilize appropriate produce sorting equipment.
