Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Produce Tracking Technologies
Abstract
The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of agricultural produce tracking technologies. Agricultural produce tracking technologies involve the use of digital and non-digital tools and systems for monitoring the movement, location, handling, and distribution of farm produce from production points to consumers. Knowledge of these technologies is increasingly important for improving traceability, reducing losses, strengthening quality management, and enhancing accountability within agricultural value chains. Farmers’ understanding of available tracking technologies can therefore influence their ability to manage and monitor produce effectively. The study will assess farmers’ level of knowledge of agricultural produce tracking technologies and identify the specific technologies known and understood by farmers. It will examine farmers’ knowledge of produce identification, tracking systems, digital record-keeping tools, barcode and QR code applications, mobile tracking platforms, and other technologies used to monitor agricultural produce. The study will also identify sources of information through which farmers acquire knowledge about produce tracking technologies and determine the major challenges affecting their understanding and use of such technologies. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ knowledge, awareness, sources of information, and exposure to agricultural produce tracking technologies. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques may be used where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agricultural produce tracking technologies. Farmers who have greater exposure to extension education, digital agricultural information, training programmes, and technology-based agricultural services are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of produce tracking systems. The study may also identify gaps in farmers’ understanding of technologies such as barcode systems, QR codes, mobile applications, electronic records, and digital platforms for monitoring produce movement. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, technology providers, farmers’ organizations, and other stakeholders interested in improving agricultural traceability. The findings are expected to highlight areas where farmers require additional education and technical support. Improved knowledge of produce tracking technologies may help farmers strengthen record keeping, monitor produce movement, reduce handling losses, improve market accountability, and meet emerging requirements for agricultural product traceability. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge is essential for farmers to effectively understand and utilize agricultural produce tracking technologies. It will recommend increased extension education, practical demonstrations, farmer training programmes, digital literacy support, and improved access to information on appropriate tracking technologies. Strengthening farmers’ knowledge of these technologies is expected to contribute to improved traceability, transparency, quality management, and efficiency in agricultural production and marketing systems.
