Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Product Development

Abstract

Agricultural product development involves the transformation, improvement, packaging, and presentation of agricultural products into forms that meet consumer needs and create additional economic value. It may include activities such as processing, product diversification, quality improvement, packaging, branding, labelling, and development of new products from farm outputs. Farmers’ knowledge of agricultural product development is important because adequate knowledge can support value addition, reduce postharvest losses, improve market opportunities, and increase the income potential of agricultural enterprises. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agricultural product development. It will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of product development activities, examine their understanding of methods for improving agricultural products, and assess their knowledge of processing, packaging, branding, quality management, and product diversification. The study will also identify areas where farmers may have limited knowledge of developing marketable agricultural products. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural processing, value addition, product diversification, product quality, packaging, labelling, branding, product presentation, storage, market requirements, consumer preferences, and basic product development planning. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of developing new products from crops, livestock, fisheries, and other agricultural outputs while maintaining appropriate quality and safety standards. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of agricultural product development and related practices. The data will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, mean scores, standard deviation, and other appropriate statistical techniques to determine farmers’ overall knowledge levels and identify specific areas of knowledge gaps. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding agricultural product development. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of basic processing and value-addition activities, while others may have limited knowledge of product branding, packaging, labelling, quality standards, consumer preferences, and product diversification. The study may also identify specific areas where farmers require additional information and practical training to improve their product development capacity. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agro-processors, agribusiness operators, government agricultural agencies, rural development organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for designing extension education programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge of agricultural product development and value addition. The findings may also assist farmers in reducing postharvest losses, improving product quality, accessing better markets, and creating additional income opportunities. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of agricultural product development is important for enabling farmers to add value to farm outputs and improve the commercial potential of agricultural products. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension services provide practical education on processing, product diversification, packaging, branding, labelling, quality management, consumer requirements, and market-oriented product development to strengthen farmers’ capacity to develop competitive agricultural products.
