Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Digital Agricultural Data Collection

Abstract

Digital agricultural data collection is becoming increasingly important in modern farming because it provides farmers and agricultural stakeholders with timely and organized information for farm planning, monitoring, record keeping, and decision-making. Digital tools such as mobile applications, smartphones, tablets, GPS-enabled devices, digital forms, and other electronic data collection platforms can improve the accuracy and accessibility of agricultural information. Farmers’ knowledge of these tools is therefore important for effective participation in modern agricultural information systems. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of digital agricultural data collection. It will examine farmers’ awareness and understanding of digital methods used to collect, record, store, and manage agricultural information. The study will also determine the extent to which farmers understand the use of digital devices and applications for collecting information relating to their farming activities. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of smartphones, tablets, mobile agricultural applications, digital questionnaires, electronic farm records, GPS-enabled devices, digital photographs, and other technologies used for agricultural data collection. Areas of assessment will include collecting farm information, recording production activities, documenting input use, capturing farm locations, recording harvest information, storing agricultural records, and submitting farm data through digital platforms. Farmers’ sources of information and exposure to agricultural extension services relating to digital data collection will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and knowledge assessment tests. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize farmers’ knowledge and awareness levels. Correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between farmers’ exposure to digital agricultural information and their knowledge of digital agricultural data collection. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding digital agricultural data collection. Farmers who have greater access to smartphones, digital agricultural platforms, extension information, and practical training may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge than farmers with limited exposure to digital technologies. The study may also reveal that although some farmers are familiar with smartphones and mobile applications, their knowledge of using these tools specifically for systematic agricultural data collection may be limited. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, digital agriculture providers, researchers, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for developing training programmes that improve farmers’ understanding of digital data collection tools and encourage the use of accurate agricultural records. The findings may also assist extension agencies in identifying digital knowledge gaps and providing practical demonstrations that can improve farmers’ participation in digital agricultural information systems. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge of digital agricultural data collection is important for improving agricultural record keeping, information management, and participation in modern agricultural information systems. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies provide practical training on the use of smartphones, mobile applications, digital forms, GPS-enabled devices, and other appropriate data collection technologies. Extension programmes should also promote simple and accessible digital tools that farmers can understand and use effectively in collecting and managing agricultural information.
