Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Environmental Monitoring on Farms

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of environmental monitoring on farms, focusing on farmers’ understanding of the observation and management of environmental conditions that influence agricultural production. Environmental monitoring is important for identifying changes in soil, water, vegetation, weather conditions, waste accumulation, and other factors that may affect farm productivity and environmental quality. Adequate knowledge of environmental monitoring can enable farmers to identify potential environmental problems early and take appropriate measures to maintain productive and sustainable farming systems. The study will examine farmers’ knowledge of key environmental indicators on farms, including soil condition, water quality, erosion, vegetation cover, weather conditions, pest-related environmental changes, and agricultural waste accumulation. It will also assess farmers’ understanding of basic methods used to observe and record environmental changes, as well as their ability to identify environmental conditions that may require corrective action. In addition, the study will identify farmers’ major sources of information on environmental monitoring, including agricultural extension personnel, fellow farmers, training programmes, agricultural media, environmental agencies, and digital information platforms. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of environmental monitoring practices and their sources of environmental information. The data obtained will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to examine farmers’ knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of environmental monitoring on farms. Farmers who have greater access to extension education, environmental information, practical demonstrations, and training programmes may demonstrate better understanding of environmental indicators and monitoring procedures. However, inadequate extension contact, limited access to monitoring tools, insufficient environmental information, low technical awareness, and limited training opportunities may contribute to knowledge gaps among farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, environmental agencies, policymakers, farmers’ organizations, and development practitioners on areas where farmers require additional education and technical support. Strengthening extension education through practical demonstrations, farmer training, simplified monitoring techniques, and timely environmental information may improve farmers’ capacity to identify and respond to environmental changes on their farms. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of environmental monitoring is important for promoting sustainable farm management and maintaining agricultural productivity. It will recommend increased extension education, regular environmental monitoring training, practical demonstrations, improved access to simple monitoring tools, and stronger collaboration between farmers, extension personnel, and environmental stakeholders.
