Abstract
The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of farm gate produce handling. Farm gate produce handling refers to the activities carried out immediately after agricultural produce is harvested and brought to the point of collection, sale, storage, or transportation. Proper handling at this stage is important for maintaining produce quality, reducing physical damage, minimizing post-harvest losses, and ensuring that agricultural products remain suitable for marketing and consumption. The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of key farm gate produce handling practices. These will include careful harvesting and collection, sorting, cleaning, grading, weighing, packaging, temporary holding, loading, protection from contamination, proper stacking, and preparation of produce for transportation. The assessment will also consider farmers’ knowledge of appropriate handling procedures for maintaining the quality and market value of agricultural produce at the farm gate. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of farm gate produce handling practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation to determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of the identified practices. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ knowledge of farm gate produce handling practices. The findings may indicate that farmers possess varying levels of knowledge regarding sorting, grading, weighing, packaging, temporary storage, loading, and protection of produce from damage and contamination. The study may also identify specific areas where knowledge gaps exist among farmers and where additional agricultural information may be required. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, produce marketers, and policymakers by providing information on farmers’ knowledge of farm gate produce handling. The findings may assist extension personnel in identifying areas requiring further education and in developing practical training programmes aimed at improving farmers’ handling of agricultural produce after harvest. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of farm gate produce handling is important for maintaining produce quality and reducing avoidable post-harvest losses. It will recommend that agricultural extension officers provide farmers with practical demonstrations, advisory services, and regular training on proper sorting, grading, packaging, weighing, storage, loading, and transportation preparation practices.
