Abstract
The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of herbicide sprayer calibration. Proper sprayer calibration is an important aspect of effective herbicide application because it helps farmers apply the recommended quantity of herbicide uniformly and efficiently. Adequate knowledge of calibration procedures can reduce under-application and over-application, improve weed control, minimize unnecessary chemical use, and promote safer agricultural production practices. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of key aspects of herbicide sprayer calibration, including nozzle selection, spray width, application speed, pressure adjustment, flow rate, calibration measurements, and determination of the appropriate spray volume. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of checking sprayer performance before application and adjusting equipment to achieve accurate herbicide distribution across the farm. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of herbicide sprayer calibration procedures. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ knowledge of herbicide sprayer calibration and identify areas where knowledge may be adequate or inadequate. It is also expected to provide information on farmers’ understanding of nozzle selection, spray pressure, flow rate, operating speed, spray volume, and other calibration requirements that influence the accuracy of herbicide application. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on farmers’ knowledge of herbicide sprayer calibration. The findings may also assist extension personnel in designing practical training programmes and demonstrations that improve farmers’ understanding of appropriate sprayer calibration procedures. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of herbicide sprayer calibration is important for promoting accurate and efficient herbicide application. It will recommend regular extension education, practical field demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance on sprayer calibration to strengthen farmers’ knowledge and encourage proper herbicide application practices.
