Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Manure Application on Farmland

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of manure application on farmland. Manure is an important organic soil amendment that can improve soil fertility, nutrient availability, soil structure, moisture retention, and crop productivity when properly managed and applied. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate manure application practices is important because the type, quantity, timing, placement, storage, and handling of manure can influence its effectiveness in agricultural production. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of manure application is therefore important for understanding their ability to use organic soil amendments effectively and sustainably. The study will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of manure application on farmland. It will specifically assess farmers’ knowledge of different types and sources of manure, manure collection and storage, manure preparation, appropriate application rates, application timing, methods of application, manure placement, incorporation into the soil, and safety practices during manure handling. The study will also examine farmers’ awareness of the benefits and possible limitations associated with the proper use of manure for maintaining soil fertility and supporting crop production. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on farmers’ knowledge and awareness of manure application practices. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation to determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of manure application on farmland. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of manure application practices. Farmers may demonstrate greater knowledge of common manure sources and basic application methods, while knowledge of recommended application rates, appropriate timing, manure maturity, proper storage, and effective incorporation into the soil may be comparatively limited. The study may also identify gaps in farmers’ understanding of the appropriate handling and application of manure to maximize its benefits and minimize potential environmental and production-related problems. The findings will provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, soil and crop specialists, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, farmer organizations, and other stakeholders involved in sustainable agricultural production. The findings are expected to identify areas where farmers require additional education and practical guidance on manure management and application. Such information can assist extension personnel in developing training programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge of organic soil fertility management and sustainable farm practices. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of manure application is important for effective soil fertility management and sustainable crop production. It will recommend strengthening agricultural extension education on manure management, providing practical demonstrations on appropriate application methods and rates, promoting proper manure storage and handling, and improving farmers’ access to reliable information on organic soil fertility practices. Improving farmers’ knowledge of manure application is expected to support better soil management and sustainable agricultural production.
