Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Millet Production Technologies
Abstract
Millet is an important cereal crop that contributes to food security, household income, livestock feed, and agricultural livelihoods, particularly in areas where crops are produced under challenging environmental conditions. Its adaptability to relatively low rainfall and poor soil conditions makes it an important crop for many smallholder farmers. However, improved millet production requires adequate knowledge of recommended production technologies. Limited knowledge of improved technologies may affect crop establishment, management, yield, and overall farm productivity. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of millet production technologies is therefore important for identifying knowledge gaps and strengthening agricultural support services. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of millet production technologies. It will determine the level of farmers’ knowledge of recommended millet production technologies and identify specific areas where knowledge deficiencies exist. The study will also examine farmers’ sources of agricultural information and their exposure to extension services, training programmes, field demonstrations, and advisory activities relating to millet production. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of improved millet varieties, seed selection and treatment, land preparation, planting time, planting methods, spacing, fertilizer application, soil fertility management, moisture conservation, weed control, pest and disease management, harvesting, threshing, drying, storage, and post-harvest handling. It will also consider farmers’ access to agricultural extension agents, improved inputs, demonstrations, training programmes, and other sources of technical information on millet production technologies. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from millet farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of recommended production technologies and sources of agricultural information. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, knowledge-level assessment, frequency distributions, and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to examine factors associated with farmers’ knowledge of millet production technologies. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding improved millet production technologies. Farmers with greater access to extension services, practical training, field demonstrations, and reliable agricultural information may demonstrate better knowledge of improved varieties, planting techniques, soil fertility management, moisture conservation, weed control, pest and disease management, harvesting, and storage. The study may also identify specific knowledge gaps related to the selection and application of improved production technologies. The study will be useful to millet farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, research institutions, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, farmer organisations, input suppliers, and other stakeholders involved in cereal production. It may provide useful information for identifying farmers’ technical knowledge needs and improving the delivery of extension and training programmes. The findings may also assist agricultural organisations in developing practical educational activities that promote farmers’ understanding of improved millet production technologies. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of millet production technologies is important for effective crop management and improved millet production. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer training, field demonstrations, advisory visits, and dissemination of relevant information on improved millet production technologies. Farmers should also be encouraged to participate in extension programmes and gain access to improved inputs and appropriate technologies to improve crop performance, yield, product quality, and farm productivity.
