Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of On-Farm Biodiversity Conservation
Abstract
On-farm biodiversity conservation involves the protection and management of diverse crops, livestock, plants, beneficial organisms, soil organisms, and other biological resources within agricultural production systems. Biodiversity contributes to soil fertility, pollination, natural pest regulation, nutrient cycling, and ecological stability, making its conservation important for sustainable agricultural production. Farmers’ knowledge of on-farm biodiversity conservation is therefore essential because their management decisions can influence the protection and continued availability of biological resources within farming systems. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of on-farm biodiversity conservation. It will examine farmers’ understanding of the importance of agricultural biodiversity and determine their knowledge of practices that can protect and maintain diverse biological resources on farms. The study will also identify areas of adequate knowledge and knowledge gaps relating to crop diversity, natural vegetation, beneficial organisms, soil biodiversity, and other components of on-farm biodiversity. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of on-farm biodiversity conservation, crop diversity, livestock diversity, natural vegetation, beneficial insects, pollinators, soil organisms, habitat management, agroforestry, crop diversification, traditional crop varieties, natural pest control, ecological balance, and sustainable agricultural production. Attention will be given to farmers’ understanding of how different biological resources contribute to farm productivity and how appropriate management practices can support their conservation. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires containing knowledge-based questions on on-farm biodiversity conservation practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine farmers’ levels of knowledge and identify variations in knowledge across relevant farmer characteristics. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of on-farm biodiversity conservation. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of crop diversification, natural vegetation protection, beneficial insects, and soil organisms, while others may have limited understanding of the importance of conserving traditional crop varieties, pollinators, and other biological resources. The study may also identify knowledge gaps that could affect farmers’ ability to integrate biodiversity conservation into their routine farm management activities. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for designing extension education programmes that improve farmers’ understanding of on-farm biodiversity and its contribution to sustainable agricultural production. The findings may also assist agricultural and environmental agencies in developing practical training and demonstration activities that encourage farmers to conserve biological resources while maintaining productive farming systems. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge is an important consideration in promoting effective on-farm biodiversity conservation. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education, field demonstrations, and advisory services on crop diversification, natural vegetation conservation, habitat management, protection of beneficial organisms, and conservation of traditional agricultural resources. Farmers should be encouraged to improve their knowledge and application of suitable biodiversity conservation practices to support ecological balance, farm productivity, and sustainable agricultural production.
