Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Pigeon Pea Production Techniques

Abstract

Pigeon pea production is an important agricultural activity that contributes to household food security, income generation, soil improvement, and diversification of farming enterprises. The crop is valued for its nutritional content, adaptability to different production conditions, and usefulness as a source of food and other agricultural products. However, successful pigeon pea production requires adequate knowledge of appropriate production techniques. Assessing farmers’ knowledge of these techniques is therefore important for identifying areas of knowledge gaps and improving production practices. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of pigeon pea production techniques. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of recommended production practices, identify the techniques commonly known and applied by farmers, and examine areas where farmers may have inadequate technical knowledge. It will also assess farmers’ understanding of important production activities from land preparation and planting to harvesting and postharvest handling. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of pigeon pea production techniques, land preparation, seed selection, seed treatment, planting methods, spacing, soil fertility management, weed management, pest and disease control, moisture management, crop maintenance, harvesting, drying, threshing, storage, and postharvest handling. Information will be obtained from pigeon pea farmers to determine their level of understanding and awareness of recommended production techniques. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected pigeon pea farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Knowledge scores will be used to determine farmers’ levels of knowledge of pigeon pea production techniques, while relevant inferential statistical methods may be applied to examine associations between farmers’ characteristics and their knowledge of recommended production practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding pigeon pea production techniques. Farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of basic activities such as land preparation, planting, and harvesting, while knowledge gaps may exist in areas such as seed treatment, appropriate spacing, soil fertility management, pest and disease control, and postharvest handling. The study may also identify specific production practices requiring greater technical attention and farmer education. The study will be useful to pigeon pea farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for designing farmer education and extension programmes aimed at improving knowledge of pigeon pea production. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training activities that address farmers’ specific production challenges and knowledge gaps. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of recommended production techniques is important for effective pigeon pea production and farm management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and technical advisory services on pigeon pea production. Extension programmes should emphasize improved seed selection, planting methods, soil fertility management, weed and pest control, harvesting, and postharvest practices to improve farmers’ knowledge and support sustainable pigeon pea production.
