Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Pre-Harvest Field Inspection

Abstract

Pre-harvest field inspection is an important farm management practice that enables farmers to examine crop conditions before harvesting and identify issues that may affect yield, quality, and marketability. Regular inspection of fields can help farmers detect crop maturity, pest and disease symptoms, weed problems, physical damage, and other conditions that require attention before harvesting begins. Adequate knowledge of pre-harvest field inspection can therefore support timely decision-making and improve the management of agricultural production. The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of pre-harvest field inspection. Specifically, it will examine farmers’ awareness of pre-harvest inspection practices, assess their knowledge of the major conditions that should be observed during field inspection, determine their understanding of appropriate inspection procedures, and identify the major sources of information through which farmers acquire knowledge about pre-harvest field inspection. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to assess their knowledge and understanding of pre-harvest field inspection. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to examine relationships between selected farmer characteristics and their level of knowledge of pre-harvest field inspection. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge among farmers regarding pre-harvest field inspection. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of crop maturity assessment, pest and disease observation, weed monitoring, and identification of physical crop damage, while others may have limited knowledge of systematic field inspection procedures. Limited extension contact, inadequate technical information, lack of practical training, and reliance on traditional farm practices may be identified as factors affecting farmers’ knowledge. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, policymakers, agricultural development agencies, researchers, and farmers’ organizations. Improved farmer knowledge of pre-harvest field inspection may support earlier identification of production problems, better harvesting decisions, improved crop quality, and reduced avoidable losses before and during harvest. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of pre-harvest field inspection is important for effective crop management and timely harvesting decisions. It will recommend increased extension education, practical field demonstrations, farmer training, and continuous access to relevant technical information to improve farmers’ knowledge and application of appropriate pre-harvest field inspection practices.
