Abstract
The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of proper produce stacking methods in agricultural storage. Proper stacking of agricultural produce is important for maintaining product quality, preventing physical damage, reducing storage losses, and ensuring effective use of available storage space. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate stacking methods can influence the condition of stored produce and the efficiency of storage operations. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of appropriate stacking arrangements, spacing between produce stacks, stack height, use of pallets or raised platforms, ventilation around stored produce, separation of different produce types, and safe movement within storage areas. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of the effects of overcrowding, improper placement, excessive stack height, and inadequate ventilation on stored agricultural produce. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers involved in the storage of agricultural produce in the selected study area. A suitable sampling procedure will be used to select respondents, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on farmers’ knowledge of proper produce stacking methods. Data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ knowledge of proper produce stacking methods and identify areas where knowledge may be inadequate. It is also expected to indicate farmers’ understanding of safe stack arrangement, appropriate spacing, stack height, ventilation, and the use of suitable storage supports. The findings may further identify common knowledge gaps that could affect the quality and safety of stored agricultural produce. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, farmers’ organizations, and other stakeholders involved in post-harvest management. The study will provide information that can guide the development of extension messages and practical training programmes aimed at improving farmers’ knowledge of proper produce stacking methods and reducing avoidable storage losses. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of produce stacking methods is important for effective agricultural storage and post-harvest management. It will recommend that agricultural extension services should provide farmers with practical demonstrations, training, and technical information on appropriate stacking arrangements, safe stack heights, ventilation, spacing, and the proper use of storage supports to promote better storage practices.
