Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Resource-Efficient Agriculture
Abstract
Resource-efficient agriculture is an important approach to improving agricultural productivity while promoting the efficient use of land, water, energy, labour, inputs, and other farm resources. Efficient resource utilization can help farmers reduce unnecessary production costs, minimize waste, conserve natural resources, and improve the sustainability of farming activities. However, farmers’ ability to apply resource-efficient agricultural practices depends partly on their knowledge of appropriate methods and technologies. Assessing farmers’ knowledge is therefore important for identifying areas where additional agricultural information and support may be required. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of resource-efficient agriculture. The study will determine farmers’ level of knowledge of resource-efficient agricultural practices and assess their understanding of methods for improving the efficient use of farm resources. It will also identify areas of knowledge strength and gaps among farmers regarding resource conservation, input management, energy efficiency, water use, labour utilization, and waste reduction. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of resource-efficient agriculture, efficient water use, soil management, fertilizer application, energy conservation, labour management, farm input optimization, agricultural waste utilization, machinery efficiency, irrigation efficiency, resource conservation, production planning, and sustainable farm management. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their understanding of practices that can improve resource utilization and reduce avoidable losses in agricultural production. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate knowledge assessment tools. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data. Knowledge scores will be used to classify farmers’ level of understanding of resource-efficient agriculture, while relevant inferential statistical methods may be applied to examine associations between selected farmer characteristics and their knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of resource-efficient agriculture among farmers. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of efficient water use, fertilizer management, waste utilization, and labour planning, while others may have limited knowledge of energy-saving technologies, precision input use, machinery efficiency, and resource conservation practices. The study may also identify specific knowledge gaps that could limit farmers’ ability to use available resources efficiently. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for designing farmer education and extension programmes focused on efficient resource utilization. The findings may also assist stakeholders in promoting practical and affordable technologies that can improve farm resource management, reduce waste, and support sustainable agricultural production. The study concludes that farmers’ knowledge is an important consideration in promoting resource-efficient agricultural practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education, practical demonstrations, and advisory services on efficient water, energy, labour, soil, fertilizer, and input management. Extension programmes should also promote appropriate resource-saving technologies and farm planning practices to improve farmers’ capacity to utilize available resources efficiently and sustainably.
