Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Reusable Materials in Agriculture

Abstract

The study assesses farmers’ knowledge of reusable materials in agriculture, focusing on farmers’ awareness and understanding of materials that can be reused for productive agricultural purposes. The reuse of suitable agricultural materials can contribute to waste reduction, resource conservation, lower production costs, and improved environmental management. Materials such as crop residues, animal waste, organic matter, packaging materials, containers, and other farm by-products may provide useful alternatives when properly managed and reused. The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of different types of reusable agricultural materials and their potential uses in farming activities. It will examine farmers’ understanding of the reuse of crop residues for mulching, composting, and animal feeding, the use of animal waste for soil improvement, and other appropriate applications of reusable farm materials. The study will also identify farmers’ major sources of information about reusable materials, including extension agents, fellow farmers, farmers’ organizations, agricultural training programmes, and agricultural media. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom respondents will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of reusable materials and their sources of agricultural information. The data obtained will be analysed using frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to examine farmers’ knowledge levels. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of reusable materials in agriculture. Farmers with greater exposure to extension education, practical demonstrations, and agricultural information may demonstrate better knowledge of the potential uses and benefits of reusable materials. However, inadequate extension contact, limited access to relevant information, lack of practical training, and insufficient knowledge of safe reuse methods may contribute to knowledge gaps among farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information to agricultural extension personnel, policymakers, farmers’ organizations, and development agencies on areas where farmers require additional education concerning the identification, management, and reuse of agricultural materials. Increased extension education and practical demonstrations may improve farmers’ understanding of reusable materials and encourage more efficient use of available farm resources. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of reusable materials is important for promoting efficient resource utilization and sustainable agricultural production. It will recommend regular extension education, practical training, field demonstrations, and accessible agricultural information to improve farmers’ knowledge of reusable materials and their appropriate applications in farming.
