Abstract
The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of sustainable farm ecosystem management. Sustainable farm ecosystem management is important for maintaining soil health, conserving natural resources, protecting biodiversity, and supporting long-term agricultural productivity. Adequate knowledge of ecosystem-based management practices can help farmers balance agricultural production with the conservation of soil, water, vegetation, and other natural resources within the farm environment. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of sustainable farm ecosystem management practices, including soil conservation, water management, maintenance of vegetation, biodiversity conservation, organic matter management, integrated crop and livestock management, erosion control, and responsible use of agricultural inputs. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of the relationships between different components of the farm ecosystem and the importance of maintaining ecological balance for sustainable agricultural production. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers in the selected study area, from whom a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of sustainable farm ecosystem management. The data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, standard deviation, and an appropriate inferential statistical technique. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ knowledge of sustainable farm ecosystem management and identify areas of adequate and inadequate knowledge. It is also expected to provide information on farmers’ understanding of soil conservation, water resource management, biodiversity protection, vegetation management, erosion control, and responsible agricultural input use. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, environmental management institutions, farmers’ organizations, and policymakers by providing information on farmers’ knowledge of sustainable farm ecosystem management. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes, field demonstrations, and technical guidance aimed at strengthening farmers’ understanding of ecosystem-based agricultural practices. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of sustainable farm ecosystem management is important for maintaining productive and environmentally responsible farming systems. It will recommend regular extension education, practical demonstrations, farm visits, and technical guidance on soil, water, vegetation, biodiversity, and resource management to strengthen farmers’ knowledge and promote sustainable agricultural production.
