Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Tractor Maintenance Requirements

Abstract

The study will assess farmers’ knowledge of tractor maintenance requirements. Proper tractor maintenance is important for maintaining reliable machine performance, reducing mechanical breakdowns, extending tractor service life, and ensuring the timely completion of agricultural operations. Farmers’ knowledge of essential tractor maintenance requirements can therefore contribute to improved machinery management and more efficient farm operations. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of routine tractor inspection, engine oil and filter changes, coolant and fluid checks, lubrication of moving components, tyre pressure monitoring, battery maintenance, belt inspection, fuel system care, and replacement of worn or damaged parts. It will also examine farmers’ understanding of tractor maintenance schedules, early identification of mechanical faults, proper cleaning, safe storage, and the importance of following recommended servicing intervals. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. The population will comprise farmers who own, operate, or regularly use tractors in the selected study area. A suitable sampling procedure will be used to select respondents, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to assess farmers’ knowledge of tractor maintenance requirements. Data collected will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. The study is expected to reveal the level of farmers’ knowledge of tractor maintenance requirements and identify areas where knowledge may be inadequate. It is also expected to show farmers’ understanding of routine servicing, lubrication, fluid management, tyre and battery maintenance, inspection of tractor components, replacement of worn parts, and adherence to recommended maintenance schedules. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural mechanization agencies, tractor service providers, farmers’ organizations, and other stakeholders involved in agricultural mechanization. The study will provide information that can guide the development of practical training and extension programmes aimed at improving farmers’ knowledge of tractor maintenance and reducing avoidable machinery breakdowns. The study will conclude that adequate knowledge of tractor maintenance requirements is important for maintaining tractor efficiency, reducing downtime, and improving the reliability of farm operations. It will recommend that agricultural extension services should provide farmers with practical demonstrations, technical training, and advisory information on routine tractor inspection, servicing, lubrication, fluid checks, component maintenance, fault identification, and proper tractor storage.
