Abstract

Vegetative boundary management involves the establishment, maintenance, and proper use of trees, shrubs, grasses, and other suitable vegetation along the boundaries of agricultural fields. Properly managed vegetative boundaries can help define farmland, reduce soil erosion, protect field edges, conserve biodiversity, reduce wind effects, and contribute to sustainable land management. Farmers’ knowledge of appropriate boundary management practices is important because adequate understanding can influence their ability to establish, maintain, and utilize vegetation effectively on farm boundaries. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of vegetative boundary management. It will examine farmers’ understanding of the importance, establishment, maintenance, and management of vegetation used along farm boundaries. The study will also identify farmers’ knowledge of suitable boundary vegetation, planting arrangements, maintenance practices, erosion control functions, and environmental benefits associated with vegetative boundaries. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of vegetative boundary management, boundary vegetation, tree planting, shrubs, grasses, field margins, erosion control, soil conservation, wind protection, biodiversity conservation, vegetation maintenance, sustainable land management, and farmland protection. Attention will be given to farmers’ understanding of appropriate plant selection, spacing, pruning, replacement of damaged plants, and management of vegetation to prevent competition with crops and maintain productive farmland. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires containing knowledge-based questions on vegetative boundary management practices. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine farmers’ level of knowledge and identify differences in knowledge across relevant farmer characteristics. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of vegetative boundary management. Some farmers may demonstrate adequate knowledge of tree and grass establishment, erosion control, and vegetation maintenance, while others may have limited understanding of appropriate plant selection, spacing, pruning, and long-term boundary management. The study may also identify specific knowledge gaps that could limit the effective management of vegetative boundaries on farms. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, environmental organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for designing extension education programmes that address farmers’ knowledge gaps and promote appropriate vegetative boundary management. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing practical demonstrations and training activities on suitable vegetation selection, establishment, maintenance, and conservation of farm boundaries. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of vegetative boundary management is important for promoting effective soil conservation, farmland protection, and sustainable agricultural land management. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education, field demonstrations, and advisory services on appropriate vegetative boundary practices. Farmers should be encouraged to improve their knowledge of vegetation selection, establishment, maintenance, and management to maximize the environmental and agricultural benefits of vegetative farm boundaries.
