Assessment of Farmers’ Understanding of Agricultural Information Translated Into Local Languages
Abstract
The translation of agricultural information into local languages is an important extension communication approach for improving farmers’ understanding of technical agricultural recommendations. Farmers may encounter difficulties understanding agricultural information presented in unfamiliar or highly technical languages, particularly when the information involves specialized production practices, pest management, input use, soil conservation, or agricultural technologies. Providing agricultural information in familiar local languages may improve comprehension, interpretation, and practical application of extension messages. This study will assess farmers’ understanding of agricultural information translated into local languages. It will examine the extent to which farmers understand agricultural information communicated through local languages and determine their level of comprehension of selected agricultural messages. The study will also identify areas of agricultural information that farmers understand easily and areas where difficulties in interpretation may occur. The study will focus on farmers’ understanding of translated agricultural information, local language communication, agricultural extension messages, information comprehension, agricultural terminology, extension communication, farmer literacy, information interpretation, agricultural knowledge, production recommendations, pest management information, input-use information, and sustainable farming practices. Attention will be given to the clarity, simplicity, relevance, and accuracy of translated agricultural information and how these factors relate to farmers’ understanding. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires and selected comprehension-based questions designed to assess their understanding of agricultural information presented in local languages. The data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine farmers’ level of understanding and identify variations across relevant farmer characteristics. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ understanding of agricultural information translated into local languages. Farmers may demonstrate better comprehension of messages that use familiar words, simple expressions, clear explanations, and locally relevant examples. However, difficulties may occur where technical agricultural terms are poorly translated, messages are ambiguous, or the language used does not adequately reflect farmers’ everyday communication patterns. Differences in literacy, farming experience, and exposure to extension services may also influence understanding. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, translators, agricultural development agencies, community organisations, policymakers, and researchers. It may provide useful information for improving the preparation and delivery of agricultural information in local languages. The findings may also assist extension agencies in developing clearer communication materials and strengthening translation practices to ensure that important agricultural recommendations are understood by farmers. The study concludes that the quality and clarity of local-language translation are important considerations in improving farmers’ understanding of agricultural information. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies use simple, familiar, and technically accurate local-language expressions when preparing extension messages. Extension personnel and translators should also consider farmers’ linguistic backgrounds and communication needs, while practical demonstrations and verbal explanations should be used where necessary to reinforce understanding.
