Assessment of Young Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Land Inheritance Practices

Abstract

Agricultural land inheritance practices refer to the processes and arrangements through which farmland is transferred from one generation to another within families and communities. Knowledge of land inheritance practices is important among young farmers because access to agricultural land can influence their ability to establish and sustain farming enterprises. Understanding customary, family, and formal arrangements relating to land inheritance can also help young farmers prepare for future ownership, management, and use of inherited agricultural land. This study will assess young farmers’ knowledge of agricultural land inheritance practices. It will determine the level of knowledge young farmers possess regarding the processes, procedures, and arrangements involved in inheriting agricultural land. The study will also examine their understanding of land ownership rights, inheritance procedures, documentation, family arrangements, and responsibilities associated with inherited farmland. The study will focus on young farmers’ knowledge of family-based land inheritance, customary inheritance practices, formal land documentation, succession arrangements, land ownership transfer, land-use rights, boundary identification, family agreements, and responsibilities associated with inherited agricultural land. It will also examine the sources of information through which young farmers acquire knowledge about land inheritance, including parents, elders, community leaders, farmer groups, agricultural extension agents, legal professionals, and government land agencies. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from young farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of agricultural land inheritance practices. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while knowledge indices, correlation analysis, and regression analysis will be used to determine the level of knowledge and factors associated with young farmers’ understanding of agricultural land inheritance practices. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of agricultural land inheritance practices among young farmers. Young farmers who have greater interaction with parents, older farmers, community leaders, extension agents, and relevant agricultural information sources may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge. However, limited awareness, inadequate documentation, family disagreements, changing inheritance arrangements, limited access to formal land information, and insufficient engagement with relevant institutions may contribute to knowledge gaps among young farmers. The study will be useful to young farmers, agricultural extension agents, farming families, community leaders, government land agencies, agricultural researchers, non-governmental organisations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information on young farmers’ understanding of agricultural land inheritance practices and identify areas where additional education and advisory support are required. The findings may also assist agricultural organisations in developing programmes that improve young farmers’ knowledge of land ownership, inheritance, and succession processes. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of agricultural land inheritance practices is important for preparing young farmers for future access to and management of family farmland. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension and relevant land institutions provide young farmers with appropriate education on land inheritance procedures, documentation, ownership arrangements, land-use rights, and succession planning through training programmes, community workshops, advisory services, and accessible agricultural information materials.
