Bilateral Differences in Foot Arch Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines bilateral differences in foot arch dimensions among undergraduate students. The foot arch is an important structural feature that contributes to weight distribution, shock absorption, balance, and efficient movement during standing and locomotion. Differences between the right and left foot arches may occur among individuals and may provide useful information on normal anatomical variation and functional asymmetry. The study will assess selected dimensions of the right and left foot arches among undergraduate students and determine the extent of bilateral variation between them. Relevant measurements such as arch height, arch length, and other appropriate arch dimensions will be obtained using standardized anthropometric procedures. The measurements will be recorded separately for the right and left feet to allow direct comparison. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the eligibility criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through direct assessment of both feet using suitable anthropometric instruments and standardized measurement procedures. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate paired statistical technique will be used to determine significant differences between corresponding measurements of the right and left foot arches. The study is expected to reveal the distribution of foot arch dimensions among the participants and identify the extent of bilateral differences between the right and left feet. Variations may be observed in arch height, arch length, and other selected dimensions, providing information on the degree of asymmetry in foot arch morphology among undergraduate students. The findings may be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, physiotherapists, podiatrists, orthopaedic practitioners, and other professionals involved in the assessment of foot structure and function. The study may provide baseline anthropometric information that can support understanding of normal foot asymmetry and contribute to studies involving posture, gait, footwear design, and lower-limb assessment. The study will conclude by documenting bilateral differences in foot arch dimensions among undergraduate students. It will recommend the use of standardized procedures when assessing foot arch characteristics and encourage further studies involving larger and more diverse populations to provide additional information on bilateral variation in foot morphology.
