Effect of Adult Learning Methods on Farmers’ Retention of Agricultural Information

Abstract

Adult learning methods are important approaches used to facilitate the acquisition, understanding, and retention of knowledge among farmers participating in agricultural education and extension programmes. Farmers differ in their educational backgrounds, experiences, learning preferences, and ability to retain newly acquired information. The use of appropriate adult learning methods may therefore influence how effectively farmers remember and apply agricultural information received through extension activities. Effective learning approaches can contribute to improved knowledge retention and better use of recommended agricultural practices. This study will examine the effect of adult learning methods on farmers’ retention of agricultural information. It will assess the learning methods commonly used in agricultural education and extension programmes and determine their influence on farmers’ ability to recall information provided during training and advisory activities. The study will also examine differences in information retention among farmers exposed to different adult learning approaches. The study will focus on adult learning methods such as practical demonstrations, group discussions, experiential learning, problem-solving activities, participatory learning, field-based instruction, question-and-answer sessions, and farmer-centred training approaches. Farmers’ retention of agricultural information will be assessed based on their ability to recall and explain information relating to crop production, farm management, input use, soil management, pest control, harvesting, and other relevant agricultural practices. Factors such as frequency of training and exposure to extension information will also be considered in assessing information retention. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires, knowledge retention tests, and relevant agricultural extension records. Descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to determine the relationship between adult learning methods and farmers’ retention of agricultural information. Comparative analysis may also be used to examine differences in retention across farmers exposed to different learning methods. The study is expected to reveal that the use of participatory and practical adult learning methods may have a positive effect on farmers’ retention of agricultural information. Farmers exposed to methods that encourage active participation, practical experience, discussion, demonstration, and problem-solving may demonstrate stronger recall of agricultural information than those exposed mainly to conventional information delivery approaches. The extent of information retention may also vary according to the type and frequency of learning activities provided. The study will be useful to agricultural extension agents, adult educators, farmers, agricultural development agencies, non-governmental organizations, training institutions, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for improving the design and delivery of farmer education programmes and selecting learning approaches that support better knowledge retention. The findings may also assist extension professionals in developing farmer-centred training programmes that are practical, participatory, understandable, and suitable for adult learners. The study concludes that adult learning methods are important considerations in improving farmers’ retention of agricultural information and strengthening the effectiveness of agricultural education and extension activities. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension programmes incorporate participatory discussions, practical demonstrations, experiential learning, field-based activities, and other learner-centred approaches to improve farmers’ understanding and retention of agricultural information. Extension agencies should also regularly assess farmers’ knowledge retention to improve the effectiveness of future training programmes.
