Effect of Agricultural Advisory Services on Farmers’ Knowledge of Gully Prevention Practices

Abstract

Gully erosion is a serious form of land degradation that occurs when concentrated surface runoff removes soil and creates deep channels on agricultural land. It can reduce farmland area, remove fertile topsoil, damage farm infrastructure, and negatively affect agricultural productivity. Agricultural advisory services can provide farmers with relevant information, technical guidance, and practical recommendations on measures that can prevent the formation and expansion of gullies and support sustainable farmland management. This study will examine the effect of agricultural advisory services on farmers’ knowledge of gully prevention practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural advisory services, determine their level of knowledge of gully prevention measures, and examine the influence of advisory services on farmers’ understanding of appropriate erosion control practices. It will also identify areas where farmers require additional technical information for effective gully prevention and farmland conservation. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of runoff management, vegetative barriers, grass strips, contour farming, water diversion structures, check dams, stone bunds, proper drainage management, cover cropping, and maintenance of soil conservation structures. It will also examine farmers’ knowledge of early identification of erosion-prone areas, prevention of concentrated water flow, maintenance of vegetation cover, and appropriate responses to developing erosion channels. Sources and frequency of agricultural advisory information will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on access to agricultural advisory services, knowledge of gully prevention practices, and sources of technical information. The data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural advisory services and farmers’ knowledge of gully prevention practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who have greater access to agricultural advisory services may possess better knowledge of gully prevention practices than farmers with limited advisory contact. Regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, training sessions, and conservation information may improve farmers’ understanding of runoff control, vegetation management, drainage practices, and erosion prevention structures. However, limited advisory coverage, inadequate technical information, lack of conservation materials, and insufficient practical demonstrations may contribute to knowledge gaps among farmers. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, soil and water conservation agencies, environmental organisations, agricultural development programmes, farmers’ associations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. The findings may provide useful information for strengthening advisory programmes that promote early gully prevention, sustainable soil management, and improved protection of agricultural land from erosion. The study concludes that agricultural advisory services can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge of gully prevention practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural advisory agencies strengthen farmer education through regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, training programmes, and community-based conservation activities. Advisory services should provide farmers with clear technical information on runoff control, drainage management, vegetation-based conservation, and the maintenance of erosion control structures to support effective gully prevention.
