Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Bambara Groundnut Production Practices

Abstract

Bambara groundnut production is an important agricultural activity that contributes to household food security, income generation, soil improvement, and diversification of farming enterprises. The crop is valued for its nutritional content and ability to adapt to different production conditions, making it an important crop for smallholder farmers. However, effective production requires appropriate knowledge of land preparation, seed selection, planting methods, spacing, soil fertility management, weed control, pest management, harvesting, and postharvest handling. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with the technical information and practical guidance required to improve their production practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of Bambara groundnut production practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, determine their level of knowledge of recommended production techniques, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of improved Bambara groundnut production practices. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of agricultural information provided to farmers. The study will focus on agricultural extension, Bambara groundnut production, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, seed selection, land preparation, planting methods, spacing, soil fertility management, weed management, pest control, moisture management, harvesting, storage, and adoption of recommended production practices. Information will be obtained from Bambara groundnut farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and the extent to which the information received is applied in their production activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected Bambara groundnut farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of Bambara groundnut production practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended Bambara groundnut production practices. Farmers with regular access to extension agents, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory information may demonstrate greater adoption of improved seed selection, planting methods, spacing, soil fertility management, weed control, pest management, harvesting, and storage practices. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and timely technical information contribute to improved application of recommended production techniques. The study will be useful to Bambara groundnut farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at promoting Bambara groundnut production and improving farmers’ technical capacity. The findings may also assist extension personnel in identifying specific production and postharvest practices that require greater attention during farmer education and advisory activities. The study concludes that agricultural extension is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of Bambara groundnut production practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and follow-up advisory services for Bambara groundnut producers. Extension programmes should emphasize improved planting materials, appropriate crop management, weed and pest control, harvesting, and storage practices to support sustainable Bambara groundnut production and improved farm productivity.
