Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Crop Sanitation Practices

Abstract

Crop sanitation practices are important components of effective crop production and disease management because they help reduce the accumulation and spread of disease-causing organisms, pests, and other harmful materials within farms. Practices such as removal of infected plant parts, destruction of crop residues, field cleaning, removal of volunteer plants, proper disposal of diseased materials, and maintenance of clean planting areas can contribute to healthier crops. Agricultural extension plays an important role in providing farmers with the knowledge and practical guidance required to understand and adopt appropriate crop sanitation practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of crop sanitation practices. The study will assess farmers’ exposure to agricultural extension services and determine the extent to which extension information, training, demonstrations, and advisory support influence their adoption of recommended crop sanitation practices. It will also identify areas where farmers may require additional extension assistance to improve sanitation activities on their farms. The study will focus on farmers’ adoption of practices such as removal and proper disposal of diseased plant materials, destruction of infected crop residues, removal of weeds and volunteer plants, cleaning of farm tools, maintenance of field hygiene, timely removal of affected crops, and proper management of post-harvest residues. It will also examine extension activities including farm visits, training programmes, field demonstrations, farmer meetings, advisory communication, and distribution of agricultural information materials in promoting crop sanitation. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to agricultural extension and their adoption of crop sanitation practices. Data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, while correlation and regression analysis may be used to determine the relationship between agricultural extension exposure and farmers’ adoption of recommended crop sanitation practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services may demonstrate higher adoption of recommended crop sanitation practices. Extension information and practical demonstrations are expected to improve farmers’ understanding of the importance of field hygiene, removal of infected materials, residue management, and proper cleaning of farm equipment. However, inadequate extension contact, limited labour availability, insufficient sanitation materials, high labour requirements, and farmers’ limited awareness may affect consistent adoption of recommended practices. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, crop protection specialists, agricultural development agencies, research institutions, government agricultural departments, non-governmental organisations, and researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes that promote effective crop sanitation and sustainable disease prevention. The findings may also assist agricultural stakeholders in developing practical training programmes and demonstration activities that encourage farmers to adopt appropriate sanitation practices. The study concludes that agricultural extension can contribute to improved adoption of crop sanitation practices by providing farmers with relevant information, practical skills, and continuous advisory support. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, field days, and accessible educational materials on crop sanitation. Farmers should also be encouraged to maintain proper field hygiene, promptly remove infected plant materials, manage crop residues appropriately, and clean farm tools regularly to reduce the spread of crop diseases and support healthier crop production.
