Assessment of Farmers’ Knowledge of Agritourism Attraction Development

Abstract

Agritourism attraction development involves the identification, improvement, and presentation of agricultural resources and farm-based activities that can attract visitors and provide recreational, educational, cultural, or experiential opportunities. These attractions may include farm landscapes, crop and livestock activities, farm tours, processing demonstrations, cultural experiences, recreational facilities, and opportunities for visitors to participate in agricultural activities. Farmers’ knowledge of attraction development is important for effectively transforming agricultural resources into appealing and sustainable agritourism experiences. This study will assess farmers’ knowledge of agritourism attraction development. It will determine the extent to which farmers understand the principles and practices involved in identifying, developing, managing, and promoting attractions on agricultural farms. The study will also examine farmers’ knowledge of visitor needs, attraction planning, farm activity presentation, recreational facilities, educational experiences, safety considerations, and the development of attractive farm environments. The study will focus on farmers’ knowledge of agritourism attraction development, farm attractions, visitor preferences, farm tours, agricultural demonstrations, recreational activities, cultural experiences, farm landscapes, educational activities, visitor facilities, attraction planning, farm presentation, safety management, visitor engagement, and agritourism enterprise development. It will also assess farmers’ sources of information on agritourism and identify knowledge gaps and challenges that may affect their ability to develop suitable attractions. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their knowledge of agritourism attraction development, sources of information, and understanding of relevant attraction development practices. The collected data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, percentages, mean scores, and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine farmers’ level of knowledge and examine variations in knowledge across relevant farmer characteristics. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of farmers’ knowledge of agritourism attraction development. Farmers with greater exposure to agricultural extension services, tourism-related education, training programmes, farmer organisations, and agritourism information may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge of attraction planning and development. The study may also identify knowledge gaps relating to visitor needs, recreational facilities, farm presentation, safety measures, educational activities, and effective management of farm-based attractions. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, tourism organisations, farmer cooperatives, government agricultural and tourism agencies, development organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension education and advisory programmes on agritourism development. The findings may also assist relevant stakeholders in developing practical training programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge of attraction development and encourage the effective use of agricultural resources for tourism purposes. The study concludes that adequate knowledge of agritourism attraction development is important for farmers seeking to develop successful and sustainable farm-based tourism enterprises. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies collaborate with tourism organisations to provide farmers with regular training and practical guidance on attraction planning, visitor needs, farm presentation, recreational facilities, safety management, and visitor engagement. Farmers should also be encouraged to identify and develop suitable agricultural and cultural resources that can provide valuable experiences for visitors and generate additional farm income.
