Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Farm Temperature Monitoring
Abstract
The study examines the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of farm temperature monitoring. Temperature is an important weather factor that influences crop growth, germination, flowering, water requirements, pest and disease development, and overall crop productivity. Monitoring temperature conditions on farms can provide farmers with useful information for making timely and informed decisions throughout the crop production process. The study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services relating to farm temperature monitoring and determine the extent to which extension personnel educate farmers on temperature measurement, interpretation, and application in crop production. It will also examine the level of farmers’ adoption of farm temperature monitoring practices and determine how temperature information is used in making farm management decisions. A descriptive survey research design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires administered through an appropriate sampling procedure. The data collected will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be used to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of farm temperature monitoring. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who receive regular agricultural extension services are more likely to adopt farm temperature monitoring practices. Extension services are expected to improve farmers’ understanding of temperature variations and their effects on crop production, as well as encourage the use of appropriate temperature monitoring tools. However, limited access to monitoring equipment, inadequate technical knowledge, insufficient extension contact, and poor availability of weather information may constrain adoption. The findings will be useful to agricultural extension officers, agricultural development agencies, policymakers, meteorological institutions, and farmers’ organizations by providing information on the importance of extension services in promoting farm temperature monitoring. The findings may also assist in developing practical extension programmes that improve farmers’ knowledge and use of temperature information for crop production and farm management. The study will conclude that effective agricultural extension can contribute to improved adoption of farm temperature monitoring among farmers. It will recommend strengthening extension education on temperature monitoring and interpretation, improving farmers’ access to affordable temperature-monitoring devices, and promoting the regular dissemination of relevant temperature information to support informed agricultural decisions.
