Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Seedling Transplanting Techniques
Abstract
Seedling transplanting is an important agricultural practice used in the establishment of many crops, particularly vegetables and other crops that require nursery raising before field establishment. Proper transplanting techniques can improve plant establishment, reduce seed wastage, promote uniform crop growth, and contribute to improved farm productivity. However, farmers may experience difficulties in selecting healthy seedlings, preparing planting sites, determining appropriate transplanting time, maintaining suitable spacing, and minimizing transplanting shock. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with the technical knowledge and practical guidance required to adopt appropriate seedling transplanting techniques. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of seedling transplanting techniques. The study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, determine their knowledge of recommended transplanting practices, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of improved seedling transplanting techniques. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of technical information provided to farmers on nursery management and field establishment. The study will focus on agricultural extension, seedling transplanting techniques, farmers’ knowledge, extension contact, seedling selection, nursery management, land preparation, transplanting time, planting depth, spacing, root handling, watering, transplanting shock management, field establishment, and adoption of recommended transplanting practices. Information will be obtained from farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and the extent to which the information received is applied during seedling transplanting activities. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of seedling transplanting techniques. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may improve farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended seedling transplanting techniques. Farmers with regular access to extension agents, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory information may demonstrate greater adoption of appropriate seedling selection, transplanting time, spacing, planting depth, watering, and transplanting shock management practices. The study may also indicate that practical extension support contributes to improved seedling establishment and more effective field management. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, agricultural development agencies, nursery operators, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at improving farmers’ nursery and crop establishment practices. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address common challenges associated with seedling transplanting. The study concludes that agricultural extension is an important source of technical knowledge and practical support for improving farmers’ adoption of seedling transplanting techniques. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and follow-up advisory services on nursery management and transplanting. Extension programmes should emphasize healthy seedling selection, proper transplanting time, spacing, planting depth, watering, and management of transplanting shock to promote successful crop establishment and sustainable farm productivity.
