Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Soil Organic Matter Management

Abstract

Soil organic matter management is an important aspect of sustainable agricultural production because organic matter contributes to soil structure, nutrient availability, moisture retention, microbial activity, and overall soil productivity. Appropriate management practices can help maintain soil fertility, improve soil conditions, and support long-term crop production. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with relevant information, practical demonstrations, and technical guidance on effective soil organic matter management practices. The study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of soil organic matter management. Specifically, it will assess farmers’ access to extension information on soil organic matter management, determine the extent of technical support received from extension personnel, examine farmers’ level of adoption of recommended organic matter management practices, and identify the major factors influencing their adoption. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on agricultural extension and the adoption of soil organic matter management practices. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the collected data will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of soil organic matter management. The study is expected to find that agricultural extension has a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of soil organic matter management practices. Farmers who receive regular extension information, practical demonstrations, technical advice, and follow-up support are expected to demonstrate greater use of practices such as compost application, incorporation of crop residues, use of animal manure, and other methods of maintaining soil organic matter. However, limited access to organic materials, labour requirements, inadequate extension contact, insufficient knowledge, and competing farm priorities may constrain adoption among some farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, policymakers, soil management specialists, agricultural development agencies, and farmers’ organizations. Improved extension support may strengthen farmers’ knowledge and capacity to manage soil organic matter effectively, thereby contributing to improved soil fertility, better crop growth, sustainable land management, and long-term agricultural productivity. The study will conclude that effective agricultural extension is important for promoting farmers’ adoption of appropriate soil organic matter management practices. It will recommend increased extension visits, practical field demonstrations, farmer training, improved access to relevant organic materials and technical information, and continuous advisory support to enhance sustainable soil management among farmers.
