Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Soil Test-Based Fertilizer Recommendations

Abstract

Soil test-based fertilizer recommendations are important for guiding farmers in the selection and application of fertilizers according to the nutrient status and requirements of agricultural soils. Appropriate use of soil test information can help farmers avoid excessive or inadequate fertilizer application, improve nutrient-use efficiency, reduce production costs, and support sustainable soil management. Agricultural extension can play an important role in providing farmers with information and technical guidance on soil testing and the interpretation and application of fertilizer recommendations. The study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of soil test-based fertilizer recommendations. Specifically, it will assess farmers’ access to extension information on soil testing and fertilizer recommendations, determine the extent of technical support received from extension personnel, examine farmers’ level of adoption of soil test-based fertilizer recommendations, and identify the major factors influencing their adoption. A descriptive survey design will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected farmers using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on agricultural extension and the adoption of soil test-based fertilizer recommendations. Appropriate sampling techniques will be used to select respondents, while the collected data will be analyzed using frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation. Inferential statistical techniques may also be employed to determine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of soil test-based fertilizer recommendations. The study is expected to find that agricultural extension has a positive effect on farmers’ adoption of soil test-based fertilizer recommendations. Farmers who receive regular extension information, practical demonstrations, soil testing guidance, and technical advice are expected to demonstrate greater use of fertilizer recommendations based on soil test results. However, limited access to soil testing facilities, testing costs, inadequate extension contact, insufficient knowledge of test results, and limited availability of recommended fertilizers may constrain adoption among some farmers. The findings are expected to provide useful information for agricultural extension officers, policymakers, soil management specialists, agricultural development agencies, and farmers’ organizations. Improved extension support may strengthen farmers’ ability to understand and apply soil test-based fertilizer recommendations, thereby promoting efficient fertilizer use, improved soil fertility management, reduced input wastage, and sustainable crop production. The study will conclude that effective agricultural extension is important for promoting farmers’ adoption of soil test-based fertilizer recommendations. It will recommend increased extension visits, practical soil testing demonstrations, farmer training, improved access to affordable soil testing services, and continuous technical support to enable farmers to effectively use soil test information in fertilizer management.
