Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Adoption of Stone Bunding Practices

Abstract

Stone bunding is an important soil and water conservation practice that involves placing lines of stones across farmland to reduce surface runoff, control soil erosion, and improve water retention. The practice can help reduce the movement of fertile topsoil, slow down rainwater flow, improve soil moisture availability, and support sustainable crop production, particularly in areas affected by water erosion. Agricultural extension services provide farmers with information, technical guidance, and practical knowledge that can influence their understanding and adoption of stone bunding practices. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ adoption of stone bunding practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to extension services, determine their level of awareness and knowledge of stone bunding, and examine the extent to which extension contact influences their adoption of the practice. It will also identify factors that may encourage or constrain farmers’ use of stone bunds for soil and water conservation. The study will focus on extension visits, farmer training, field demonstrations, conservation advice, and access to information on stone bund construction and maintenance. It will also examine farmers’ adoption of practices such as appropriate stone placement, bund spacing, alignment across slopes, maintenance of bund structures, and integration of stone bunds with other soil conservation measures. Farmers’ knowledge, access to materials, labour requirements, farm characteristics, and perceptions of stone bunding will also be considered. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers through structured questionnaires designed to obtain information on extension contact, knowledge, awareness, adoption levels, and challenges associated with stone bunding practices. The data will be analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the relationship between agricultural extension services and farmers’ adoption of stone bunding practices. The study is expected to reveal that farmers who have greater access to agricultural extension information and practical training may demonstrate higher levels of knowledge and adoption of stone bunding practices. Extension demonstrations and regular advisory contacts may improve farmers’ understanding of proper stone bund construction, placement, maintenance, and benefits. However, limited access to suitable stones, labour requirements, construction costs, inadequate technical support, and the availability of suitable farmland may affect adoption. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, soil and water conservation agencies, agricultural development organisations, farmers’ associations, environmental organisations, policymakers, and agricultural researchers. The findings may provide useful information for improving extension programmes aimed at promoting effective soil conservation practices and supporting farmers in areas affected by erosion and declining soil productivity. The study concludes that agricultural extension can play an important role in improving farmers’ knowledge and adoption of stone bunding practices. It is therefore recommended that extension agencies strengthen practical training, field demonstrations, farm visits, and farmer group activities on stone bund construction and maintenance. Extension programmes should also provide guidance on appropriate site selection, stone placement, bund spacing, and integration with other conservation practices to encourage effective and sustainable adoption.
