Effect of Agricultural Extension on Farmers’ Knowledge of Agricultural Traceability Systems

Abstract

Agricultural traceability systems are mechanisms used to identify, record, and track agricultural products and their movement from production through handling, processing, storage, transportation, and marketing. Traceability can improve transparency, product safety, quality control, accountability, and market confidence by making it possible to obtain information about the origin and handling history of agricultural produce. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with the knowledge and technical guidance required to understand and participate effectively in traceability systems. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural traceability systems. It will assess the extent to which extension services, training, demonstrations, and advisory information improve farmers’ understanding of traceability requirements and procedures. The study will also examine farmers’ knowledge of the importance of traceability and their understanding of the records and identification practices required for tracking agricultural produce. The study will focus on extension activities such as farmer training, farm visits, practical demonstrations, group meetings, distribution of technical information, and market-oriented advisory services. It will examine farmers’ knowledge of product identification, farm records, production dates, input records, harvesting records, batch identification, storage records, transportation information, product labeling, and documentation of produce movement. Attention will also be given to farmers’ understanding of how traceability can support food safety, quality assurance, certification, market access, and accountability within agricultural supply chains. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from farmers using structured questionnaires designed to assess their exposure to agricultural extension and their knowledge of agricultural traceability systems. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ knowledge of traceability systems. Knowledge levels across different traceability requirements will also be assessed. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension has a positive effect on farmers’ knowledge of agricultural traceability systems. Farmers who receive regular extension contact, practical demonstrations, and relevant technical information may demonstrate better understanding of record keeping, product identification, labeling, and tracking procedures. However, inadequate extension services, limited digital literacy, poor record-keeping practices, lack of appropriate technology, limited access to traceability information, and perceived costs of implementing traceability systems may restrict farmers’ knowledge and participation. The study will be useful to farmers, agricultural extension agents, farmer organizations, produce marketers, processors, certification bodies, regulatory agencies, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders in the agricultural sector. The findings may assist extension organizations in developing training programmes that improve farmers’ understanding of traceability requirements and strengthen their participation in organized agricultural supply chains. Improved knowledge may also support better product documentation, quality assurance, food safety, certification, and access to markets that require traceable agricultural products. The study concludes that agricultural extension is an important avenue for improving farmers’ knowledge of agricultural traceability systems. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen farmer education through practical training, demonstrations, simplified record-keeping guides, and digital information tools that promote understanding of traceability procedures. Collaboration among extension agencies, regulatory bodies, certification organizations, farmer groups, processors, and market stakeholders should also be encouraged to improve farmers’ access to traceability information and technical support.
