Effect of Agricultural Extension on Livestock Farmers’ Adoption of Hay Quality Management abstract
Abstract
Hay quality management is an important aspect of livestock production because the quality of conserved forage can influence feed intake, animal health, productivity, and the overall efficiency of livestock enterprises. Proper hay management involves appropriate harvesting time, drying, moisture control, storage, protection from contamination, and regular assessment of feed quality. However, livestock farmers may experience difficulties in maintaining hay quality due to inadequate technical knowledge and limited access to appropriate advisory information. Agricultural extension can provide farmers with practical knowledge and technical guidance needed to improve hay quality management. This study will examine the effect of agricultural extension on livestock farmers’ adoption of hay quality management practices. The study will assess farmers’ access to agricultural extension services, determine their knowledge of recommended hay quality management practices, and examine the extent to which extension support influences their adoption of appropriate hay management techniques. It will also assess the frequency of extension contact and the types of technical information provided to livestock farmers. The study will focus on agricultural extension, livestock farmers, hay quality management, extension contact, forage harvesting, drying methods, moisture control, hay storage, contamination prevention, mould control, feed handling, hay inspection, preservation practices, and adoption of recommended hay quality management techniques. Information will be obtained from livestock farmers to determine their exposure to extension services and the extent to which the information received is applied in the production, handling, and storage of hay. A quantitative research approach will be adopted for the study. Data will be collected from selected livestock farmers using structured questionnaires and appropriate field observation methods. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distributions, percentages, means, and standard deviations will be used to summarize the data, while correlation and regression analysis will be used to examine the relationship between agricultural extension and farmers’ adoption of hay quality management practices. The study is expected to reveal that agricultural extension may improve livestock farmers’ knowledge and adoption of recommended hay quality management practices. Farmers with regular access to extension agents, practical demonstrations, and technical advisory services may demonstrate better adoption of appropriate harvesting, drying, moisture control, storage, contamination prevention, and hay inspection practices. The study may also indicate that regular extension contact and timely technical information contribute to improved maintenance of hay quality and reduced feed losses. The study will be useful to livestock farmers, agricultural extension agents, livestock development agencies, researchers, agricultural cooperatives, feed management organizations, and policymakers. It may provide useful information for strengthening extension programmes aimed at improving forage conservation and livestock feeding practices. The findings may also assist extension personnel in developing practical training programmes that address farmers’ specific challenges in maintaining the quality of stored hay. The study concludes that agricultural extension is an important source of technical knowledge and support for improving livestock farmers’ adoption of hay quality management practices. It is therefore recommended that agricultural extension agencies strengthen regular farm visits, practical demonstrations, farmer training, and follow-up advisory services on hay production and management. Extension programmes should emphasize appropriate harvesting, drying, moisture control, storage, contamination prevention, and quality assessment practices to support the availability of good-quality hay and sustainable livestock production.
